Hong Kong: The British Chevening Scholarships for Hong Kong in postgraduate study in the UK

Overview

The Chevening Scholarships are part of a global programme funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London.

Chevening Scholarships have offered in Hong Kong for the first time since 1996. Since then, 509 people have received awards from the British Consulate-General to study at some of the finest universities and institutions in the United Kingdom.

Globally, the Chevening Scholarships scheme offers around 1,000 awards to outstanding young professionals each year. Since 1998 the scheme has also been open to residents of Macao.

Introduction to scholarship

Are you a permanent resident of Hong Kong or Macao? If so, you could be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, an opportunity to develop your academic and professional skills at major British universities and institutions. The scheme is managed by the British Council in Hong Kong on behalf of the British Consulate-General. An advisory board of distinguished local figures lends practical and policy support.

Priority is given to subjects relevant to the region’s commercial, economic and social development of Hong Kong and Macao. Subject areas frequently chosen by scholars include business administration, law, finance and international relations. Scholarships have also been awarded for studying design, photography, architecture, education administration and engineering.

There are two types of awards designed to give you the choice of funding for a one-year taught Master’s degree or shorter intensive training programme:

Postgraduate Scholarships for one-year taught Master's courses
Shorter Specialist Scholarships for three-month or six-month professional development courses in Journalism

Hutchison Chevening Scholarships

In 1999, former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair announced his initiative to attract more overseas postgraduate students to Britain to follow courses at British universities and higher education institutions as part of the global Chevening Scholarships scheme.

In April 2002 in response to the then Prime Minister’s initiative Dr Li Ka-shing and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd made a generous contribution to the Chevening Scholarships scheme in Mainland China and Hong Kong. The value of the Hutchison Whampoa contribution is over £3.5 million. This, combined with FCO funding, facilitated more than 480 full scholarships for Hong Kong and mainland Chinese postgraduate students between 2002-2009. It also allowed for 89 Hutchison Chevening Scholarships to be awarded in Hong Kong including 21 for study at the University of Cambridge.

Dr Li Ka-Shing,
Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Limited

"I strongly believe in continuing education and life long learning programmes, and so I am pleased that the Hutchison Chevening Scholarships will support the higher education of high calibre Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese graduates and business managers and help them to broaden their experience and follow their specialist studies in the United Kingdom. In particular, I appreciate the active participation and support of Cambridge University."

The Rt Hon David Miliband MP
Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

"The Chevening Programme is a really exciting way in which the Foreign Office tries to contribute to the development of the sort of internationalism that should be about more than governments and more than trade but be about people. And you represent our investment in the future of British relations with a very very wide range of countries."
