UK: 2010/11 Chevening Scholarships Programme for Chinese Students

Overview

The Chevening Scholarships is the flagship scholarship Scheme of the British Government. The Scheme is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The FCO is the British Government department responsible for overseas relations and foreign affairs through it's headquarters in London and Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates throughout the World.

In China, the scheme operates through the British Embassy in Beijing and the British Consulates-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing with administrative support from British Council. In China, British Council operates as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Beijing and British Counsulates-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.

Chevening Scholarships are aimed at applicants for postgraduate studies or research at UK institutions of Higher Education. Each year over 1000 students from 119 countries are sent to the UK to study, of which more than 100 come from China - the largest single national group.


Criteria for Eligibility

- be a permanent resident of the People's Republic of China and not currently be working or studying overseas at the time of application
- not be in receipt of any other scholarships or award for the academic year
- hold a first degree in a related subject which is recognized by UK institutions
academic IELTS test score at least 6.5 overall with no individual band less than 6.0
- be mid-career staff (with a minimum of 3 years work experience) who has managerial, policy-influencing or decision-making responsibilities
- not staff, spouses, children or parents of staff from FCO, British Council and partner organisations

Possess the following 'Chevening' qualities

- must have ambition and drive
- have leadership potential
- show a commitment to change and organisational development
- be flexible and adaptable
- be innovative and creative
- have an ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances

Trade & Investment *
Science and Technology
Environment and Sustainable Development
Energy and Climate Change
Media
Social Development especially Health care, education policy, human rights, legal reform

* Remark:UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) is the Government organisation that helps UK based companies succeed in international markets. We also assist overseas companies to bring high quality investment to the UK's vibrant economy. UKTI is looking for candidates who work for China's leading private and public organisations. They must show a drive for high personal and professional achievement linked to improving the commercial relationship between China and the UK.


Value of the scholarships

The FCO offers successful applicants scholarships covering tuition fees of up to £12,000, flights to and from the UK and living expenses sufficient for a single student. Some scholars may receive contribution from partners and sponsors of FCO.


All candidates from mainland China are supposed to submit both online application forms and supporting document: .

1.Online application form

https://www.chevening.fco.gov.uk/cheveningapplications/ca_start.aspx): The deadline for submitting Chevening scholarship online application form is 11 January 2010.

Please note once the online application form is submitted, applicants can not view or make any changes. Applicants are advised to read How to fill in online application form (http://www.britishcouncil.org/vhina-education-scholarship-chevening-2010-11_how_to_fill_in_online_application_form.pdf) Candidates will bear the consequence of submitting duplicated forms.

2.Submission of supporting documents by 11 January 2010 to our offices.

Three sets of reference forms. One original set and 2 sets of copies. Each set is consist of one academic and one professional reference form. Both letters should be written and signed by referees. Reference form can be downloaded from the website.

Three photocopies of IELTS test report form, with at least IELTS overall 6.5, and no individual band less than 6. IELTS scores are an integral part of the assessment process and you will not be interviewed without valid IELTS. Please check the IELTS Page for more information about the IELTS examination.

UK institutions' acknowledgement of application (offer or initial application correspondence with UK institutions)

One Photocopy of all relevant academic certificates and transcripts, no need accompanying English translations.
