Singapore: Research Assistant for a Research Project, National University of Singapore

Overview

Title of the project: State Boundaries, Cultural Politics and Gender Negotiations in Commercially Arranged International Marriages in Singapore and Malaysia (Synopsis attached at the end of document)

Job Description

The Research Assistant will be involved in library and field research, including interviewing (in English and Mandarin) and ethnographic work. He/she will also assist the Principal Investigator and her research team with project coordination and financial administration of the project.


The Research Assistant may be enrolled in a graduate research degree on a part-time basis.

Requirements

The applicant should possess a good Honours degree or equivalent in the Social Sciences or Humanities. He/She should have the following:

• Ability to read and speak fluently in Mandarin and English
• Pleasant disposition, ability to converse and put people at ease
• Patience, perseverance and care for detailed work
• Ability to work in a team, alongside the researchers and other research assistants
• Experiences in conducting research is an added advantage

Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions for the position are as follows:

• Contract tenable for one year in the first instance, renewable up till March 2011
• The position should begin on a mutually agreeable date between 16 December 2009 and 15 January 2010
• An all-inclusive and fixed salary which will commensurate with qualifications and relevant working experience
• Holiday leave of 28 days per calendar year, pro-rated by term of employment
• Other staff benefits entitlement
