Overview
Postdoctoral position in biomechanics:
My lab is seeking a post doc for a two-three year position (starting Fall, 2009) to investigate the biomechanics and muscle physiology of animal swimming. Our goal is to discover underlying design principles that enable high-performance swimming. Using swimming frogs as a model, we will develop experimental tools to explore how neuromuscular dynamics interact with fluid dynamics. Further, we will design and build biorobotic and biomechatronic devices to help us understand how the morphology of feet, fins and paddles affects the necessary ‘tuning’ of a motor’s force-velocity properties to power quick or efficient swimming.
In addition to a competitive salary/benefits package, the post doc will have access to state-of-the-art machine shop and electronics facilities on site. He/she will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other biomechanics labs at the nearby Harvard or MIT Campus, as well as to engage in the rich comparative biomechanics community in New England.
Requirements:
Upon hiring, applicants must have a PhD demonstrating experience in at least one of the following areas: In vitro muscle physiology, in vivo muscle techniques, biomechanics (e.g. kinematics analysis, whole-body mechanics, fluid dynamics), or robotics.
Individuals with either biological or physical sciences backgrounds are encouraged to apply, however the strongest candidates will have some experience working with animals either at the ‘whole-animal’ or ‘tissue’ level. Suitable candidates must be comfortable working independently and will be asked to help mentor undergraduate student projects.
How to apply:
Please send a CV (2 page limit, including contact information for 3 references) and a summary of your dissertation research (1 page limit) to me, Chris Richards:
richards@fas.harvard.edu
Please write “RowlandPostdoc” in the subject of your email with the application (a single file, 3 pages total) attached, preferably in PDF format. Strong candidates will be invited to interview on site or remotely. Please check the following website to verify that this post-doctoral position is still available.
