USA: A New Summer Internship Program in Berlin for American Journalism Students 2010

Overview

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the opposing perspectives and positions at play in contemporary geopolitics, it is crucial to place strong emphasis on intercultural exchange and the transmission of cultural values. DAAD and the renowned Freie Universität Berlin (named in 2007 as one of the nine "universities of excellence" in Germany) have therefore developed this unique new program to provide outstanding young journalism students – who may themselves come to have a significant influence on international opinion-shaping – with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the society, culture, values, and political attitudes in Germany. During this time of transition and change in transatlantic relations and the German-American relationship, this program will expose American students with a particular interest in Germany to the changing global political circumstances on location in Germany.

Programme content

The program consists of two complementary segments. The first six weeks will be spent at the Freie Universität Berlin, where participants will expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country's current social conditions and media scene. With these theoretical building blocks in place, participants subsequently embark on an intensive five-week internship with a German newspaper, (online-) magazine, TV or radio station. During the academic part of the program they will do an one-week educational tour within Germany with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union.

Eligibility

Applicants should either be enrolled in a school of journalism or be majoring in a journalism-related field at a college or university in the United States. If no journalism major is available at your university, you may still apply if significant interest/activity in journalism can be demonstrated (e.g. university newspaper, internship). The program is designed primarily for undergraduate students, but graduating Seniors, recent graduates and graduate students are also eligible.

Applicants must have German language proficiency at least equal to the "advanced intermediate" level. Applicants should also have a demonstrated interest in Germany and German affairs, i.e. an awareness of current political news coverage of Germany in the American media, and general familiarity with German history, culture and society. Applicants should already have had first experiences in practical journalism.

Value of Award

Applicants who are invited to a selection interview in New York City (around early March) will receive up to $300 toward the cost of their flight to the interview location.

Applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of €650 for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide participants a partial travel subsidy towards the cost of international transportation to Germany; travel costs not covered by the partial subsidy must be paid by the individual program participants themselves. DAAD will also provide health and accident insurance. Participants will pay a program fee of €140.

Participants will be housed for the duration of the program in student residence halls in Berlin, the costs of which will be paid from the monthly stipend.

Application Guidelines

A total of 40 applicants will be invited to a selection interview in New York City. A selection committee of American and German experts will then select up to 20 participants/scholarship recipients.

The required supplemental materials are:

- Resume (in English)
- Statement of motivation (in English, roughly 2pgs, double spaced)
1-2 page journalistic writing sample or broadcast transcript
- Two letters of recommendation from professors in your major field of study (Students who are not journalism/communications majors may have one letter from a supervising editor at a publication where they have worked (or a faculty supervisor in the case of student newspapers).)
- Official academic transcript(s)
- DAAD German Language Evaluation Certificate (Sprachzeugnis)
(The language evaluation form must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German Department at the applicant's institution or by an official of a Goethe Institute.)

Please send one original, signed copy of each letter of recommendation in a sealed envelope. Put these in one package together with the original versions and two photocopies of the application form (with your personal signature) and two copies of your remaining supplemental materials. Mail the package to:

DAAD New York "InternXchange"
871 United Nations Plaza
New York, NY 10017

Note: be certain to submit all materials in triplicate - one original, two photocopies (except the letters of recommendation, of which we only need one signed, sealed original). Incomplete or late applications can not be accepted.
