The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow possesses a large internationally rated Engineering Faculty with a proud history of successful joint ventures with industrial and enterprise partners. As a part of the University's strategic development the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) is currently being built near Glasgow's International Airport. The AFRC is the embodiment of a £25m collaborative investment by industrial, academic and government partners seeking to establish a world leading research facility for forging and forming technologies.
Currently, AFRC is in the process of engaging in a major research programme called SAMULET (Strategic Affordable Manufacturing in the UK with Leading Environmental Technology). SAMULET is a collaborative programme between industry and academia led by Rolls-Royce working in a consortium alongside other high profile manufacturers, small and medium sized enterprises and several of the UK's top universities. SAMULET is funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Further support is under discussion with regional bodies. The total cost of the SAMULET programme including industry investment is expected to be around £90m. AFRC is receiving support from the EPSRC pool of funding for the following projects:
1) Ultrafine grained Ti6-4 for low temperature/high productivity diffusion bonding/superplastic forming
2) Hot-die forging of advanced alloys
3) Development of tooling for superplastic forming
In order to support the awarded EPSRC projects we are seeking to appoint a successful Senior Research Fellow.
Formal interviews for the post will be held in mid November.
