Scholarization: U.S. Student Fulbright Grant allows for individually designed study/research (Full Grant--propose a project and/or study plan that will take place during one academic year in a country outside of the U.S.) or an English Teaching Assistantship
Provides grants for study/research/teaching in a single country (For exceptions, see World Region Summaries). Meet, work, and live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.
Facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in daily tasks, thereby gaining an appreciation of others' viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.
Promotes mutual understanding through engagement in the community, through interaction on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom.
Full Grant benefits for Study/Research and English Teaching Assistantships include:
Round-trip transportation to the host country
Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country
Limited Health Benefits

Book and research allowance*
Mid-term enrichment activities in many countries or world regions
Full or partial tuition Language study programs
Orientation
The allowance provides some funding for research, books, and/or supplies. Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, in-country travel, study materials, or equipment should explore additional funding from other sources to supplement the Fulbright funding.
Benefits for Study/Research grants and English Teaching Assistantships-
Are based on the cost of living in the host country
May be paid in host country currency to grantees in countries with a Commission/Foundation
Will be paid in U.S. dollars to grantees in countries without a Fulbright Commission/Foundation
Eligibility requirements:
Be U.S. citizens at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible.
Hold a B.A. degree or the equivalent (see website for equivalent definitions)before the start of the grant.
Be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate of Health from a physician.
Have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study. This is especially important for projects in the social sciences and the humanities.
Preference is usually given to applicants who:
Have undertaken their higher education primarily at educational institutions in the U.S. Foreign study during the junior year or other periods of undergraduate study that are integral parts of the curricula of American institutions will not be considered a disadvantage.
Have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.
For most grants, applicants who have had extensive previous foreign experience in the country of application are at a disadvantage, but are not necessarily disqualified for that reason.

English Teaching Assistantship Grants are awarded in 43 countries
Travel-Only Grants: Available in Italy, Germany, and Hungary only and are designed to supplement an award from any source that does not provide for international travel and a student's own funds for study or research.

Selection is made on the basis of:
Academic or professional record.
Language preparation.
Feasibility of the proposed study/research/teaching assistantship project.
Personal qualifications
Preference factors as established by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) and the Fulbright Commissions/Foundations.
The process for review of candidates:
Stage 1: National Screening Committee Review (NSC). During November and December, specialists from U.S. institutions and organizations in various fields and area studies meet in the U.S. and recommend candidates for further consideration.
Academic fields: Reviewed based on country or region by faculty from various disciplines with experience in the region.
Creative and performing arts fields: Reviewed by specialists/faculty/professionals in each field, e.g., Creative Writing, Painting, Piano, and so on.
Teaching Assistantships: Reviewed by foreign language or TOEFL professionals with world region experience.
By the end of January applicants will know if they have been recommended for further consideration. If you are recommended for a Fulbright Grant in Stage 1:
Stage 2: Host Country Review. Applications of recommended candidates are transmitted to the supervising agencies abroad for further review, particularly with regard to placement at foreign universities.
Stage 3 and final selection for Fulbright Grants is made by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), taking into account the recommendations of the NSC, availability of funds, approval of the supervising agencies abroad, and other program requirements. For non-Fulbright grants, the appropriate foreign government, university or private donor makes the final selection.
