Overview
The department of Innovation Design Engineering (www.rca.ac.uk/ide) and the Helen Hamlyn Centre (http://www.hhc.rca.ac.uk/) at the Royal College of Art invite applications for two PhD studentships in design research from suitably qualified UK & EU students.
This is a new joint PhD programme, which offers candidates the opportunity to study with expert practitioners and research staff from the Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) department, alongside experienced people-centred design researchers from the Helen Hamlyn Centre. More information on the research themes of the Helen Hamlyn Centre and IDE can be found at (http://www.hhc.rca.ac.uk/195/all/1/research.aspx and www.rca.ac.uk/ide).
The two PhD studentships are open to all relevant design disciplines and will explore the terrain of Ageing, Health and Quality of Life. Candidates for the studentships must have a high quality Honours Degree (preferably first class) or a Masters qualification or equivalent in one of the design or related disciplines. The PhD studentship will commence in October 2010.
The Royal College of Art offers research degrees by Practice or by Thesis, and applicants to both types of degree are welcome.
Amount Awarded
Each studentship consists of £5,000 per year from the Ted Powers Foundation and £5,000 per year from the Helen Hamlyn Trust, for up to 3 years. Please note that successful applicants will initially be registered on the MPhil programme, unless they already hold an MPhil degree, and will therefore be eligible to apply for an RCA bursary for part of the tuition fees (£TBC for 2010/11).
Closing Date: 1 June 2010
How to apply
Please send a detailed research proposal (max 1000 words), including an indicative bibliography, to IDE Deputy Head of Department (ashley.hall@rca.ac.uk) and HHC Research Co-ordinator (jo-anne.bichard@rca.ac.uk).
Your proposal should include a provisional timeline and cover the following:
What is your particular research question, hypothesis or area?
How do you propose to address this question or to develop the field (what is your methodology)?
How do you see your work in the wider context of the discipline? How does it relate to existing work in the area?
What skills, knowledge and experience do you have which are relevant to this study?
If your proposal is considered suitable, you will be invited to make an online application through the RCA website by 1 June 2010.
