Overview
A PhD student position is available to study and perform research in the area of climate change risk assessment. The main aim of the PhD project is to improve our understanding about climate change impacts on natural and human systems at the regional to local level and to develop and apply adequate methodologies for a sound assessment and communication of climate change related risks to stakeholders and decision makers. The emphasis of the open position is to further develop innovative ways of addressing potential risks related to climate change at the regional to local scale (e.g., downscaled hazard scenarios, GIS automated tools, multi criteria decision analysis, etc.).The proposed research will focus on risk and vulnerability assessment methodologies by analysing the state-of-the-art of approaches and tools proposed so far, and by developing and applying suitable methodologies to estimate potential natural and human risks due to climate variability and change on selected case studies.
Program Description
A fellowship in support of a PhD training (scholarship student) is available to study and perform research in the area of climate change risk assessment. The main aim of the PhD project is to improve our understanding about climate change impacts on natural and human systems at the regional to local level and to develop and apply adequate methodologies for a sound assessment and communication of climate change related risks to stakeholders and decision makers. The emphasis of the open position is to further develop innovative ways of addressing potential risks related to climate change at the regional to local scale (e.g., downscaled hazard scenarios, GIS automated tools, multi criteria decision analysis, etc.), taking into account the deep uncertainties that currently pervade every step of the risk assessment procedure.
The proposed research will focus on risk and vulnerability assessment methodologies by analysing the state-of-the-art of approaches and tools proposed so far, and by developing and applying suitable methodologies to estimate potential natural and human risks due to climate variability and change on selected case studies. Specifically, the developed risk assessment methodology will consider the stakeholders information needs in different sectors and will analyze the complex dynamics and interrelationships between interrelated sectors in an ecosystem perspective. Moreover, it will require the definition of climate change stressors and metrics useful to transfer climate information at the regional/local scale and to construct climate change hazard scenarios and the definition of vulnerable receptors/targets and of vulnerability indicators to be implemented in GIS. The PhD candidate will have to work in close collaboration with researchers from the Department of Environmental Science, from the Venice Research Consortium (CVR) and from the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC).
Research Field
Environmental science - Global change
Requirements
The PhD Candidate have a Master degree on environmental science, environmental engineering or in a closely related discipline and thesis focused on climate change-related topics. A candidate with previous experience (e.g. Master thesis or scientific publications) about climate change risk/impact scenario formulation will be positively evaluated. Our successful candidate, should be practiced in spoken and written English and should have experience with numerical models (e.g. climate, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical or hydrological models for climate change impact and risk assessment) and Geographic Information System (GIS). The position requires a high ability to interact with faculty and other PhD students and senior researchers.
We offer an up-to-date research infrastructure, collaboration in a multidisciplinary networked laboratory, and the possibility to receive the PhD from the University Cà Foscari of Venice
