Erasmus Mundus (MBIO) Master of Bioethics: Scholarships in Belgium

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics is a full-time programme of 1 academic year. However the Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics can also be followed over a period of 2 years. Students enrolled in this programme are part-time students. Other deviant part-time programmes can only be followed after the approval of the Teaching Commission Secretary: Pascal Borry.

Health care professionals and others professionally interested in the medical field find themselves increasingly confronted with moral questions and dilemmas. This programme aims at studying all issues currently relevant to bioethics specifically examining European traditions in philosophy, theology and ethics. One of the goals is also to provide an exposure to some of the daily realities of clinical and research ethics.

At the end of the programme the participants will have :

- familiarised themselves with important traditions in healthcare ethics, with major contemporary movements, as well as the conceptual, methodological, and practical issues in different areas of healthcare ethics;
- exchanged ideas and experiences amongst persons from different countries and familiarised themselves with cultural differences. They will have established an international network of contacts;
- proved able to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical circumstances, predominantly in a clinical context;
- had the opportunity to develop their skills to take part in international research in this domain.


Prerequisites

Candidates should have successfullly completed a university degree. They should also have a good knowledge of English, which will be tested in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Participants are not necessarily medical doctors, but should have enough scientific and medical knowlegde in order to analyse moral dilemmas which occur in the medical and health care sector. They should possess a good knowledge of ethical theories and of the process of ethical decision making.

Participants should be able to present an ethical position towards a group and to enter in an ethical debate. They should be informed about the actual ethical problems in health care. Also, participants should be able to review the scientific literature and to write a critical analysis of a particular ethical problem.

Admission requirements

A good command of English, both spoken and written is essential. Applicants are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English, either by proving that some of their previous studies were successfully completed in English, or by submitting the results of a recognized language proficiency test, such as the IELTS (Academic version) or a TOEFL.
The admission policy ensures equal opportunity of access to higher education for qualified European and non-European students. The programme will assess students individually on the basis of their previous academic record, their experience in the field of health care and a letter of motivation. Some students may be asked for a (telephone) interview.


TOEFL (Computer-based test 250 pt., Internet-based test 100 pt., Paper-based test 600 pt.) or IELTS (7 - 7.5 pt.)

Scholarships

Nationals coming from all countries other than the EU Member States and the EEA-EFTA states , who are not residents of any of the above countries and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries can apply for the Erasmus Mundus fellowships.

Category A

Contribution to travel Installation and other type of costs: EUR 4000

Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage): EUR 4,000/semester

Monthly allowance (during 12 months/year: EUR 1,000/month

Category B

Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage): EUR 2,000/semester

Monthly allowance (during 12 months/year: EUR 5,00/month
