Overview
The Hauser Global Law School Program at New York University School of Law is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities for junior academics who wish to spend a year in residence at the Law School engaging in research and producing a significant piece of original, publishable scholarship.
The primary mission of the Hauser Research Scholars Program is to facilitate the production of original, publishable legal scholarship by academics at the beginning of their university careers. Our aim is to provide funding and support to such people so that they can dedicate themselves in an academic environment towards completing a significant scholarly project. The Hauser Global Law School Program plans to integrate the scholarly projects of Hauser Research Scholars with the work of colloquia, centers and seminars which are at the core of the intellectual life of the Law School.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for participation in the Hauser Research Scholars Program for the 2011-2012 academic year is January 21, 2011.
Eligibility
The Hauser Research Scholars Program is open to non-US junior academics from outside of the United States who wish to spend a full academic year at NYU School of Law working on a major piece of legal scholarship. Preference will be given to candidates who have already secured a position at a university. Candidates must be on “tenure track” at their home university.
Expectations
All Hauser Research Scholars must complete a significant piece of original, publishable legal scholarship in English during their year in residence at NYU School of Law. Scholars must present an early draft at the Global Fellows Forum. Completed papers will be considered for publication as a Hauser Global Law School Work Paper.
All Hauser Research Scholars are required to be in residence at the Law School for the full academic year (fall and spring semesters). Recipients will be expected to fully participate in the intellectual life of the Law School. They must attend and participate in the Global Fellows Forum, schedule in regular intervals throughout the year, and are encouraged to participate in colloquia, seminars and other such events within their areas of interest. Appointment as a Hauser Research Scholar will be incompatible with any concurrent appointment or engagement (i.e. practice, fellowships, teaching, etc.) outside the Law School during the full academic year.
Stipend
All Hauser Research Scholars will receive US$20,000 (subject to tax) to assist with the cost of living in New York City for one academic year. However, we encourage all Hauser Research Scholars seek other sources of funding to outside NYU School of Law to support their participation in the program.
Faculty Sponsorship
All participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must have a permanent, full-time member of the New York University School of Law faculty agree to serve as his or her faculty sponsor during the proposed time of residence. Potential applicants should contact faculty members directly to ask whether they will agree to serve as a faculty sponsor.
Affiliation
Hauser Research Scholars may wish to affiliate with one of the specialized centers or institutes at NYU School of Law. Affiliation means the scholar is included in the center or institute’s activities and increased opportunities to be a part of the Law School’s intellectual community. Applicants interested in affiliating with a center or institute, should indicate thusly on the application. Health Insurance
All participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must have adequate health insurance to cover them and any family members who will accompany them during their stay in the United States. Neither NYU School of Law nor the United States government will provide health insurance. Participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must make arrangements for health insurance before they arrive in the United States so that they are covered as from their date of arrival. The program will provide information on obtaining local coverage.
Visa Information
The Hauser Global Law School Program will sponsor the relevant visa to enter US and remain here for the duration of the appointment. It is important to note that, in such cases, proof of funding or assets in the amount of US$2,000 per month of residence in the US will be required. Visas can be issued to spouses and children, provided that fellows can demonstrate they possess US$650/month to support the spouse and US$300/month per child for the duration of the visit. Further information regarding visa requirements will be provided following admission to the Hauser Research Scholars program.
Review of Applications and Decision Notification
Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records at all levels of university training and a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of their scholarly project and their future professional life. Standards for admission to the Global Fellows Program are extremely high, but not arbitrary. Candidates may expect to receive a decision on or about the end of February.
Applicants who are not successful will automatically be considered for the Global Fellows Program, whose decisions will be issued around the end of April. No additional application materials need be submitted to be considered for the Global Fellows Program.
