Overview
The U.S. Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools was formed to expand USGBC’s efforts to drive change in how schools and campuses are designed, constructed and operated so they will enhance student learning experiences and bring green schools to every child within this generation. The Green Schools Fellowship program will provide partner school districts with a fully-funded, dedicated expert who will collaborate with district leadership to change the culture of the district from the inside out by providing clear direction, comprehensive training and valuable resources. The Fellow will act as the green champion within a school district for three years, implementing transformative practices and working hands-on with teachers, staff, and students to improve their learning env i ronment .
The position offers an extraordinary amount of independence paired with a rigorous training program. Green Schools Fellows are individuals who understand the patience and persistence that is required to be a change agent in a complex organization. Fellows will be selected based on the qualifications outlined below as well as the ability to make a three year commitment to the school district. A salary increase will be offered for each year the Fellow remains in place.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
General Responsibilities
• Become thoroughly familiar with the school district’s structure, history, and staff responsibilities within the first month of hire.
• Set forth initial one, three and five year plans to progress the school district toward more efficient, environmentally responsible, healthy schools and update regularly throughout the three-year term of the Fellowship.
• Implement school district initiatives and programs that address the basic elements contained in the LEED for Schools and LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Rating Systems, including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.
• Assist in bringing Environmental Learning into district classrooms where possible.
• Advise the school district on language for contracts dealing with school grounds, building projects, cleaning and maintenance, food, procurement, waste management and any others that may influence the ability of the district to maintain efficient, environmentally responsible, healthy schools.
• Act as a convener of area green building practitioners and champions around the specified school district and other regional schools. Schedule meetings and attend regional events and conferences to make business connections and partnerships for the benefit of the school district, representing the Center for Green Schools at USGBC.
• Provide LEED information and resources for new LEED projects in the s chool district and act as a liaison between partner organizations, project teams and primary LEED technical support to ensure project success.
• Respond to media inquiries and prepare for publicity opportunities with USGBC Communications team.
Administrative Responsibilities
• Report to USGBC monthly on successes and challenges, and participate in bi-weekly webcasts with the Center for Green Schools Fellowship Manager and other Fellows around the country.
• Proact ively maintain regular communication with Center for Green Schools staff.
• Attend and participate in professional development opportunities, including in-person trainings in Washington, DC, Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, and relevant regional conferences (as funded by the Fellowship). In the conduct of all these duties, maintain positive relationships and open communications with the Center for Green Schools at USGBC, school district staff, and partners.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
Fellows must be able to lead the school district in both visioning for the future and implementing strong programs and initiatives. The demonstrated ability to carry out both of these important components of the job will be the primary requirement for hire.
Education & Training Requirements/Preferences
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Master’s degree in Organizational Sustainability, Building Sciences, Environmental Science, Public Health, Business Administration or equivalent work experience in a field related to affecting meaningful change in organizations, working in a school administrative environment, developing long-term business plans, and/or designing and maintaining green buildings.
• LEED Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional (AP) Credential preferred. Willingness to become a LEED Green Associate within first 3 months of position required.
Experience Requirements
• Minimum 2 years of work experience
• Experience working on a LEED project team preferred
• Experience in leading and managing individuals and teams, such as staff and board members preferred
