Overview
Established by a generous donation from Dr. Richard Homburg and administered by the Vice-President, Academic and Research. The Homburg International Mobility Awards have been established to assist full-time and part-time Saint Mary’s University undergraduate and graduate students to participate in approved international student exchange programs or other approved international experiences.
Types of activities supported:
- Study abroad for academic credit;
- Group training internationally;
- Language training outside of Canada;
- Volunteer placements which are recognized as part of an academic credit program; and
- Other opportunities regarding international experiences that will be considered if the applicant can demonstrate to the committee's satisfaction that the experience will contribute substantially to his or her specific program of study at Saint Mary's University.
Approved programs must:
- Entail learning or improving knowledge of a language other than English or the student's primary language.
- Have a duration of one semester or longer. Preference will be given to applicants who plan a sojourn longer than one semester.
- Be an international educational activity approved by Saint Mary’s University, as determined by the Office of International Activities in consultation with the Academic Vice-President.
- Not require travel to or through countries or regions of countries for which Foreign Affairs Canada has issued Travel Warnings.
Eligibility for Awards
In order to be considered for an award a student must:
- Have completed the equivalent of at least one year of study (normally 30 credit hours) at Saint Mary's University at the time of planned departure, and be in good standing (i.e. not on academic probation);
- Be a Canadian citizen who has been a resident of the Atlantic Provinces for at least five years;
- Be otherwise prevented by financial need from participating in the international program.
Note:
Preference may be given to a student enrolled in a business program or one who is developing knowledge of another language.
Application Process
The student must complete and submit the application form for review by the International Mobility Awards Committee. There will be two competitions for the 2010 -2011 academic year, i.e. for international experiences to take place between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011. The deadlines for applications are: March 15, 2010, and November 1, 2010 at 4pm.
Amount of Awards
Up to eight awards will be given each year, with an average allocation of $12,500.00. The full cost of the program may be covered at the discretion of the Committee.
