USA: AstraZeneca Research Scholarship for Postdoctoral Program

Overview

Each year, one award is offered in conjunction with AstraZeneca Plc to a UK citizen post-doctoral scientist to conduct research on an aspect of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Bio-informatics at any accredited US institution. The appointment will be for a minimum period of 10 months beginning at any point between 1 August 2011 and 30 April 2012.

Award Benefits

The award is for US dollar equivalent of £20,000 (converted at the prevailing rate) paid in instalments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given just prior to departure from the UK, plus reimbursement for return travel. This funding is intended as a contribution towards any institutional fees, travel to/from the US, accommodation and general maintenance costs whilst in the US. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage, visa sponsorship and processing and participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events are also included.

Selection Criteria

Minimum eligibility for this award category:

• UK citizen (resident anywhere)
• hold or expect to receive a PhD in a relevant area before departure to the US
Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive, recent experience in the US (6 months).

In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to your home country upon returning.
