Overview
Project Title: Design of Single Crystal Superalloys for Power Generation Applications
Sponsors and Industrial Collaborators: Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Finspang, Sweden
Supervisor: Professor Roger C Reed (University of Birmingham, UK)
The project will involve the design and testing of new grades of single crystal superalloy for power generation applications. The successful candidate will work within an internationally-leading research group which is concerned with the design, manufacture and performance of materials for next-generation turbine engines. Experimental work (processing, oxidation/corrosion testing, characterisation of mechanical performance) will be carried out supported by computer modelling activities. Successful liaison - and secondment for a number of months - to Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery in Sweden is an important and required part of this project.
Value of this studentship
Funding will be for 4 years and will cover University tuition fees at the UK level and provide a tax-free stipend of up to approximately £18,400 p.a. (subject to annual increase).

All candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum Class 2(i) (hons) (or equivalent) degree, preferably in Materials Science and Engineering; however candidates with degrees in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Mechanical Engineering may be suitable and are welcome to apply. Existing employees with relevant industrial work experience may also be considered.
How to apply
Informal enquiries are necessary, by e-mail, and should involve the sending of a CV. Please contact: r.reed@bham.ac.uk
