Overview
The THEN/HiER Visiting Doctoral Student Program will allow doctoral students to interact on a daily basis with students and faculty members in programs at other Canadian universities. The program provides an opportunity for up to two doctoral students enrolled in a Canadian university to visit a Faculty of Education or History Department in another Canadian university for a period ranging from two weeks to one month. THEN/HiER will cover costs related to travel, accommodation, and local transportation, as well as a per diem allowance for meals. One to two students will be selected each year to participate in the program.
Eligibility
Doctoral students enrolled in a Canadian university are eligible to apply. We welcome applications from students in diverse disciplines addressing issues of history education, including but not limited to Education, History, Museum Studies and Public History programs. Students may propose to visit a department within the same discipline as their own (for example, a Faculty of Education in a different province), or with a department in another discipline (for example, an Education student may propose to visit a History Department or Museum Studies program in another province). Students should clearly indicate the ways their research pertains to issues in history education. Research that explores the theory and practice of history education in Canada, or in comparative contexts, is preferred. Priority will be given to visits between Quebec and other provinces. Successful applicants must sign up as a member on THEN/HiER’s website, www.thenhier.ca
Application Procedures
Applications may be submitted in English or in French. All application materials should be completed in 12 point font with minimum 1” page margins. Applications should include:
• A completed application form (see below)
• A brief (maximum two-page) curriculum vitae.
• A brief (maximum 300 words) statement of purpose.
• A budget, including estimates for return economy transportation (by air, train, or bus), accommodation in the most economical university residence for the period specified in the proposal, an estimate of local transportation costs (e.g., a monthly or weekly transit pass, if available), and the set $50 per diem rate to cover meals over the duration of the visit.
• A letter of invitation from a faculty sponsor in the host department.
The statement of purpose should provide a brief overview of your research project and the ways in which the proposed visit would facilitate that research. It should also include your reasons for choosing the proposed host department, what you hope to take away from the visiting student program, and, if applicable, how the proposed visit will support developments in history education research and practice in Canada.
Students are responsible for contacting potential host departments prior to submitting their applications in order to secure the support of the department for the visit, and to identify a faculty “sponsor” to supervise the student for the duration of the visit. A letter of invitation from the faculty sponsor in the host department must be included with your application. Letters should be submitted on faculty letterhead; faxed or emailed copies are acceptable.
Application Deadline
The deadline for applications is Friday, February 26th, 2010. Applications should be emailed as a single attachment to annemarie.goodfellow@ubc.ca.
