Dow Chemical Hong Kong - Michigan Scholarship Program 2010 - 2011

Overview

For Graduate Students and Recent Ph.Ds of Michigan Universities
For Research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The Dow Chemical Company in Hong Kong has pledged its support again to a scholarship for advanced graduate students and recent PhDs of universities in the state of Michigan to spend up to ten months doing research while affiliated with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (www.ust.hk). The award starts in the 2010-2011 academic year. The Hong Kong America Center (www.cuhk.edu.hk/hkac) and the Center on China’s Transnational Relations at HKUST (http://www.ust.hk/eng/index.htm) will administer the program on behalf of Dow.

Eligible fields of study are: Environment, Energy, Sustainability, Education, Transnational Relations, Science and Technology and policy issues related to these topics. This is a unique opportunity for young American scholars in these fields to spend an academic year in a top research university in Hong Kong advancing their research and linking with scholars from China and other parts of the Asia Pacific region.

Eligible Candidates

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in Michigan or have received a PhD degree from a Michigan university within five years of application. People born in the state of Michigan who are doing graduate study (or have received a PhD within five years of application) at a university outside of Michigan are also eligible to apply. Students holding permanent residents status are also eligible to apply.

As the HKUST is an English medium university, Chinese language proficiency is not required for this award. However, some prior experience in Chinese societies and with Chinese language will definitely be an advantage. Preference will be given to proposals that show a link between the planned research in a discipline mentioned above to Asia, especially to China. Note the application form (available at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/hkac/mainframe.html ), requires a proposal for the research to be undertaken in Hong Kong.

Value of Each Scholarship

The Dow Hong Kong-Michigan Scholarship Program at the HKUST provides support for ten months with a stipend of US$17,000 and additional US$5,200 for international travel and re-location, research expenses, travel within Asia related to research, etc. In addition, the HKUST will provide housing on campus or a subsidy of US$12,820 (HK$ 100,000) for ten months towards residence off campus, including health insurance. The total value of the scholarship
is over US$35,000.
