Overview
IUGA-Funded Research Opportunities for Least Developed Countries
IUGA offers one basic science and one clinical research grant in the area of urogynecology annually to the highest scored applicant. Traditionally, all grant applications have been scored using standard criteria as set forth by the Research and Development Committee, regardless of the geographic region of the applicant. It has become increasing apparent that due to several socio-economic issues which confront LDSs (see above), the knowledge, training, and tools to complete, submit, and execute a basic science or clinical research study are not always available to individuals from these countries. In order to ensure that all geographic areas, regardless of socio-economic status, are given a fair opportunity to receive an IUGA-funded research grant, IUGA is offering research grants restricted to only those proposals that are going to be developed in LDCs. Applicants from other geographic areas (not LDCs) may apply for a research grant with a project to be done in a LDC.
How to Apply for an IUGA-Funded Research Grant for Least Developed Countries
Purpose
The purpose of the IUGA-sponsored Research Grant for Least Developed Countries is to fund the development of research in the field of urogynecology. Grants to applicants from LDCs will be awarded each year to IUGA members who complete and submit the required application prior to the stated deadline. The number of LDC grants and the amount of each will be based on the number of submissions and the needs and requested amounts of each application.
LDC grants will only be paid to an institution and not an individual. All submitted grants will be reviewed, scored, and awarded by a group of six members of the Research and Development Committee. Grant recipients will be notified in writing via email. All IUGA members in good standing are eligible to apply for a Research Grant for Least Developed Countries.
Grant Proposal
A completed grant application must be submitted to the IUGA office no later than 6 weeks prior to the annual meeting. All relevant material for the grant proposal can also be obtained on the IUGA website, under Education. Please follow the Research Grant Application instructions carefully and do not omit any sections as this will delay the submission process.
Funding may include statistical analyses, technical support (i.e. sonographer), laboratory studies, diagnostic studies (i.e. post treatment urodynamics), mailing and postage for questionnaires or other related material, patient compensation for participating in the study (i.e. meals, travel), computer and other related equipment. If funding is required to travel to the IUGA annual meeting to present findings, please include in the budget with explanation. Indirect costs, such as university overhead or IRB fees, will not be provided. Detailed funding allocation should be included in the budget section of the Research Grant for Least Developed Countries application.
Interim Report
Grant recipients are required to submit a 6 month interim report (from the date of the grant payment) stating the progress of the research study to date. Interim reports should be submitted to the IUGA office electronically at elektra@iuga.org. Interim report forms can be obtained at www.iuga.org under Education.
Final Report
Grant recipients are required to submit a final report stating the results of the research study and an itemized budget showing how funds were used, including providing receipts of paid items, where applicable. The final report will be due to the IUGA office one month following the completion of the research study award period. Final report forms can be obtained at www.iuga.org under Education.
Presentation and Publication
Grant recipients are required to submit an abstract of their completed research study for presentation at the next IUGA annual meeting and submit a completed manuscript for publication to the International Urogynecology Journal.
