Overview
PhD studentship is available within the research project concerned with the post-excavation analysis and publication of the excavations of Early Anglo-Saxon cemeteries under RAF Lakenheath, Eriswell parish, Suffolk. These excavations produced a large number and wide range of securely contextualised finds, and a key objective of the post-excavation programme is a thorough and groundbreaking analysis of the material resources, supply and technology available to and used by the population of the late fifth to late seventh centuries.
The specific subject of this PhD studentship is the non-ferrous metalwork from the sites (more than 800 objects, mostly copper-alloy). Topics to be investigated include the range of alloys and scope for provenancing of materials, and the diversity of production techniques, including extraction, hammering, casting, and decoration from tinning and gilding, to inlaying, chasing and punching. The techniques of analysis will include low-power microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, targeted X-radiography, and ICP-MS.
The principal supervisor of the student will be Professor Ian Freestone, and the second supervisor Professor John Hines, who is acting as consultant to the Suffolk county council archaeological service on the post-excavation work.
Cardiff has well-equipped archaeological laboratories and an active research group in artefacts and technology. Current related PhD research includes projects on Anglo-Saxon glass, Iron Age decorative metalwork, early medieval ceramics, and craft apprenticeship and skills transmission.
The student will be expected to start at the beginning of October 2010. It is stressed that, given the nature of the funding of this award, the successful applicant will be expected to complete his/her PhD in the standard three-year period, and that it is intended that such an undertaking will form part of a formal studentship agreement to be signed upon acceptance of an offer.
