Overview
Through its Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers fellowships to post-docs in an early stage of their academic career. While at the RSCAS, fellows work on a selected topic that fits with the research profile of the RSCAS and they are expected to participate actively in the academic life of the Centre and the EUI.
Each fellow is assigned a professorial mentor. Their stay at the Centre should result in the publication of either a RSCAS working paper or a publication in a scientific journal or with an appropriate publishing house.
Applications should include a description of the applicant's planned research project while at the Centre.
The main criteria of selection are the CV of the applicant, the overall scientific quality of the proposal, and the fit of the proposal with the Centre's research programme.
Priority is given to proposals that fit well with one or more of the Centre's core research themes: Institutions, Governance, and Democracy; Migration; Economic and Monetary Policy; Competition Policy and Market Regulation; Energy Policy; and International and Transnational Relations.
Two of the fellowships are awarded to candidates working on European Comparative Politics or European Comparative History as ‘Vincent Wright Fellowships’, in memory of the distinguished political scientist, Vincent Wright.
The Institute for Democracy Constantinos Karamanlis funds the Karamanlis Fellowship on Democracy which is awarded in the framework of the European Observatory on Democracy (EUDO) project.
Eligibility
Jean Monnet Fellowships are intended to support post-doctoral research by academics in the early stages of their professional career.
The fellowships are open to candidates who have successfully defended their Ph.D. by 31 July 2010.
Candidates are eligible during the 7-year period following the successful completion of their Ph.D. (to be eligible for the current call, 2010/2011, the Ph.D. should be completed between 31/7/2003 and 31/7/2010.
Extensions to the 7-year rule are allowed in cases of applicants whose academic career has been interrupted due to maternity leave or illness.
In particular, for each maternity leave, an additional year will be permitted, while in the case of a long or recurrent illness, the total period of illness may be taken into account in calculating eligibility.
Explanation of the circumstances should be included in the application in the field marked 'Additional Notes'. Supporting documents will be requested from candidates proposed for selection.
Candidates who have received their Ph.D. from the EUI can only apply for JMF after they have been away from the Institute and in a full-time occupation or with another fellowship for at least one year after defending the Ph.D.

Stipend
The basic stipend is € 2,000 per month.
Successful applicants benefiting from other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI, as the amount of the fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum € 1,250 per month) depending on the additional income.
If applicable, family allowances will be added to the basic stipend (see below)
Family allowance
A household allowance of € 300 per month is paid to fellows with a partner when the partner lives with the fellow in Florence and on the condition that the partner's income does not exceed € 2,000 per month.
There is a dependants allowance of € 200 per month for each dependent child living with the fellow in Florence.
