Australia: A full-time postgraduate scholarship at University of Sydney

Overview

Post-fire availability of water and growth of woody shrubs and grasses in sclerophyll forests and woodlands

A full-time postgraduate scholarship funded by the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre and the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources is on offer to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture.

Predicting growth of major understorey species in eucalypt forests in southeastern Australia is crucial to identifying fire risks. The fuel load associated with understorey species varies widely and is not simply related to age or time since fire.

Growth of understorey plants is strongly related to water availability that, in turn, is determined in part by the water use of the overstorey. Water availability is increased in the aftermath of bushfires and prescribed fires, and then declines gradually.

This project will:

(a) Collate existing sources of data on understorey growth and edaphic conditions with a view to identifying data sets that contain useful information that may be used in modelling;

(b) Conduct limited studies of understorey growth in a range of forests in Vic, NSW and the ACT. The project will combine studies of plant physiology with growth modelling.

Eligibility:

This scholarship is available to a suitably qualified candidate with a background in soil science, plant physiology and ecology, who has an honours or masters level degree in science, forestry, environmental science or closely related disciplines. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.

Amount awarded:

The award of this scholarship will be conditional on the University signing an agreement with the funding body. The scholarship is valued at $28,000 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Alternatively, a top-up scholarship valued at $10,000 per annum is being offered to recipients of an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or other alternative funding sources.
