UK: Engineering Doctorate Studentship - Visualisation for Sustainable Water and Engineering Management, University College London

Overview

University College London - UCL Department of Computer Science in conjunction with Halcrow Group Ltd

Applications are invited for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in the Department of Computer Science at the University College London (UCL) inconjunction with Halcrow Group Ltd. This is a 4-year studentship, leading to the award of an Engineering Doctorate, which offers theopportunity to conduct research within an industrial context. This EPSRC (UK Research Council) funded studentship is available to UK citizens and EU nationals if a relevant connection with the UK has beenestablished (usually by being resident for a period of three yearsimmediately before theEngD). Applicants must fulfil EPSRC eligibilitycriteria and the normal academic requirements for admission to study in the Department. This studentship will pay a tax-free stipend, plustuition fees. EU students without a relevant connection to the UK canreceive an award to cover tuition fees only. The EngD post in this project will be based at the UCL (central London) and Halcrow Group Ltd. The post is offered under the VirtualEnvironments, Imaging and Visualization Program, which is run by the Department of Computer Science at UCL.

Project

The EngD joins Halcrow's C2C concept to explore modeling andvisualisation of the underlying conceptual relationship between featuresin the water environment: from the formation of clouds, resulting instorm precipitation and runoff on land; and ultimately to dischargesinto coastal waters with/without artificial influences. The anticipatedresearch process that will underpin the application of the VEIVtechnology to the C2C concept will involve an iterative and reciprocalinteraction between a technical and algorithmic strand and aparticipatory strand, comprising 3 Stages of work, as follows:

1.Stage 1 - C2C visualisation and conceptualisation using publisheddata sets (eg refer to published catchment spatial information for UKsystems at http://www.ceh.ac.uk/data/nrfa/water_watch.html
2.Stage 2 - Run linked models via OpenMI to check validity of Stage1 output i.e. the C2C conceptualisation
3.Stage 3 - Evaluate the sufficiency of published data sets for C2C conceptualisation

Specification

• A bachelor degree (1st or 2.1 honours) or an MS in Computer Science or related field Strong knowledge of computer graphics, image processing and mathematics
• Strong programming skills, particularly C++, C, and Matlab
• Good communication and presentation skills
• GPU programming and talent in visual arts a plus
