Overview
ReVISIONS project on sustainable city regions The Martin Centre, Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge, UK
The emergence of world city regions is a challenge to sustainability targets as populations increase and people develop more affluent lifestyles. The ReVISIONS project is investigating whether particular spatial planning policies in conjunction with 'green' infrastructure technologies and regulations can make city regions more sustainable. This project is led by the Martin Centre at the University of Cambridge and will produce guidance for decision makers on the interrelationships between regional spatial planning, infrastructure design and economic competitiveness. The aim is to reduce environmental impacts and allow households to live more sustainably, with better health and an enhanced quality of life. This is four year multi-disciplinary project involving six universities. For further information see, www.regionalvisions.ac.uk
Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship to research a topic related to the general subject area of the ReVISIONS project. This ranges from planning and design to more quantitative modelling of the interaction between the design of the built environment and user behaviour. We can provide guidance on a suitable topic providing that an applicant can demonstrate original thinking and motivation to research a particular subject area. The student will be supervised by Professor Echenique, a world renowned authority on land use and transport or by Dr Tony Hargreaves, depending on the research topic. Applicants should be numerate with an interest in the built environment.
Eligible Candidates
Applicants should have, or expect to be awarded, a good first degree or master's degree. The studentship will cover tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance stipend of 13,290 per annum (for three years). Candidates must meet the ESPRC funding eligibility requirements (see: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/Pages/eligibility.aspx)
How to apply
To apply, please write to Samantha Archetti at the address below with a covering letter and a full CV (including contact details for at least two academic referees plus marks/grades achieved on current courses). The covering letter should outline the general subject area(s) that you are interested in researching, and a clear statement of your eligibility for this ESPRC funded award.
The closing date for applications is 7th April 2010. Interviews will take place towards the end of April. Any inquiries or further information about the studentship should be emailed to Jacqui Bullock on jmb236@cam.ac.uk.
