Overview
Five one-year Master of Science studentships are available within the Division of Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences, School of Life Sciences.
These prestigious NERC-funded studentships offer you the opportunity to join the course MSc in Archaeological Prospection - Shallow Geophysics and are a unique opportunity to develop your professional or research career in shallow geophysics, either for archaeology or for other near-surface applications.
The successful applicants will register in September 2010 for the full-time MSc programme.
Funding includes UK/EU tuition fees (normally £4,200), maintenance expenses of ca. £8,300 and £500 field expenses for the dissertation project.
Am I eligible?
You are, if you are an EU student with at least a 2:1 Undergraduate degree (or EU equivalent), or a corresponding professional qualification. UK students are eligible for the full studentships, EU students for the full studentships if they were resident in the UK for three years, otherwise for fees-only. An interest in resolving archaeological questions through non-invasive prospection techniques is required. You can approach the course from a background in archaeology, geophysics or other relevant subjects.
A small number of bursaries are also available for International Students.
Why Archaeological Prospection?
The course provides training in the underlying principles and applications of archaeological prospection techniques, with particular emphasis on geophysical survey for shallow features (e.g. using magnetic, earth resistance or ground penetrating radar surveys). In addition to gaining a formal qualification in this discipline, the long-established course offers an ideal opportunity to acquire in-depth understanding of fundamental issues related
to instrument usage, data processing and relevant data interpretation.
Why Bradford?
The University's Division of Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences is ideally equipped to deliver the course with excellent teaching facilities, academic staff who are experts in the field and a large number of geophysical instruments for student use (including GPR). Members of the 'Time Team' geophysics group contribute to the delivery, and the course manager is Founder of the International Society for Archaeological Prospection (ISAP). The University has an outstanding employment record and is recognised for its student support.
