UK: PhD Studentships at Imperial College London - Department of Earth Science and Engineering

Overview

A 36 month fully funded studentship for a UK/European national is available in the fuel cell engineering group at Imperial College London. The aim of the research project is to apply tomographic techniques pioneered in the group to the study of fuel cell electrodes. This project will integrate advanced experimental methods with studies of electrode processing, performance and durability. The project will work closely with parallel studies developing models of sintering and performance of such fuel cell electrodes. The work will also involve implementing existing tomography procedures to characterise material microstructures relevant to fuel cells, develop and implement geometrical analysis routines to classifiy tomography data and to explore the microstructural evolution in fuel cell electrodes induced by changes in operating environment or processing conditions which relate to fuel cell durability.

The project will suit a candidate who holds a first degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or Physics, with a desire to work at a leading edge of experimental research. A strong mathematical background is essential and experience of experimental research and Matlab is desirable.

The project forms part of the EPSRC funded Supergen fuel cells programme (http://www.supergenfuelcells.co.uk/), providing opportunities for regular engagement with other leading UK industry and academic players in fuel cell development.

It will be under the supervision of Professor Nigel Brandon (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/people/n.brandon) and Professor Alan Atkinson (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/people/alan.atkinson).

Details of the criteria required by Imperial College can be found at: www.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus/studyzone/registrationforhigherdegrees Please send your full CV with a covering letter to Mrs Leena Lindholm-White at p.lindholm-white@imperial.ac.uk
