UK: Postdoctoral Studentship in Interdisciplinary Research on Phonetic Detail, University of the Basque Country

Overview

A postdoctoral studentship is available within Sound to Sense (S2S), a Marie Curie Research Training Network involving collaborative speech research amongst 14 universities in 11 countries.

The position concerns:

Low-level processing in L2 speech perception (Project 6 of S2S)

The main objective of the project is to clarify the role of the various factors in foreign accent perception via a tightly-linked series of behavioural and computer modelling studies. More specifically, the position involves:

1.collecting corpora for foreign accent analysis from Czech and Spanish speakers using English as their foreign language
2.identification of the main phonetic correlates of foreign accent in each language by phonetic analysis with other phoneticians in Prague and Vitoria
3.speech signal manipulation and re-synthesis in temporal, frequency and intensity domains
4.collecting data from experimental situations concerning listeners' judgements

Qualifications:

Experience in experimental phonetics, statistical analysis and speech signal manipulation for experiments with human listeners is desirable.

Level of experience: EITHER you have a PhD and not more than 10 years' research experience since completing a master's degree, OR you have no PhD, but between 4 and 10 years' research experience since completing a master's degree.

Marie Curie fellows receive standard EU funding for the country of work, together with allowances for relocation, language lessons etc. Due to EU mobility rules, you cannot be appointed to a country of which you are a citizen or to a country where you have lived for more than 12 of the last 36 months.

Appointments will preferably start in May 2010 and must terminate on 30 April 2011.

Main site location: the University of Basque Country, Vitoria, Spain. Some visits to Charles University, Prague.
