Overview
Awards will normally be taken up at the commencement of the postgraduate degree and renewed annually. However under some circumstances a student who has already begun their study may be eligible.
Postgraduate Awards; Guidelines Summary

• The Australian Synchrotron offers Postgraduate Awards to support outstanding students engaged in postgraduate research that involves major use of the facility.
• The Awards are offered as top-ups to candidates with an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or an equivalent university scholarship, who are enrolled in an eligible Australian university for a Doctor of Philosophy or equivalent.
• Top-ups consist of an annual $7500 living allowance, plus $5500 for travel, minor equipment and consumables. Funding is paid to, and administered by, the university in which the student is enrolled.
• Under exceptional circumstances full scholarships will be offered.
• Up to four Awards will be offered in each round.
• The student will normally be based at the university in which they are enrolled, but will be expected to spend at least three weeks a year at the Australian Synchrotron.
• A member of the scientific staff at the Australian Synchrotron will be an Associate Supervisor of the student.
• Awards will normally be taken up at the commencement of the degree. However, under some circumstances a student who has already begun their study may be given an award.
• It is expected that the duration of experimental studies for a PhD degree will be three years. Under exceptional circumstances only the Award may be extended into part of a fourth year at the discretion of the Australian Synchrotron.
• Nominees must have completed, or expect to complete within six months a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (or equivalent) and to be enrolled, or expect to enrol within six months in a higher degree course at an eligible Australian university.
Selection criteria (equally weighted):
1. Quality of the project
2. Importance of synchrotron radiation to the research
3. Quality of the student.
