Ireland: Irish Language Fulbright Awards for Academic Year 2010

With generous support from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the National Lottery, the Fulbright Commission initiated Fulbright Irish Language Awards in 2006 with the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Awards. For the 2010 Academic Year, the Fulbright Commission is accepting applications from Irish language academics and professionals for the following 2 Fulbright Irish Language Scholar Awards:

A.Fulbright Irish Language Scholar Award at a recognised US institution
This lecturing / research award is offered to allow mid-career Irish language lecturer / professional(s) assist with Irish language teaching and curriculum development in US educational institutions currently offering and developing their Irish language courses and programs.

Close to 40 US secondary (high) schools, colleges and universities are offering Irish language tuition and may be interested in hosting a Fulbright Irish Language Scholar to:

- teach the Irish language and or
- provide curriculum development support for a period of 4 months – 9 months during the 2010 – 2011 academic year.

The Scholar will be expected to seek his / her own affiliation with a US institution. Contact the Fulbright Commission for further information about potential host institutions, their preferred grant activities and qualifications.

The maximum grant offered by the Fulbright Commission will be €50,000 for a full academic year (9 months). The grant will be pro-rated for a candidate going for less than a full academic year. The Commission will consider offering 2 pro-rated grants for successful candidates who have secured affiliations of only 1 semester (4 – 5 months).


B.Fulbright Irish Language Senior Scholar Award at the University of Notre Dame

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Irish Language and Literature at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana for the full academic year. Applications are encouraged from Lecturers in Departments of Irish Language and Literature in Irish and European Universities that can focus on modern and or contemporary literature.

Alternatively, the successful candidate may be an outstanding independent scholar or an authority in Irish language studies. All candidates would have:

- a proven track record of working, publishing, lecturing in Irish
- be comfortable working and teaching in an Irish-language environment
- an impressive publication record and considerable teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate level. The teaching load for the academic year is two courses per term/semester.

The maximum grant offered by the Fulbright Commission will be €70,000 for a full academic year (9 months). The grant will be pro-rated for a candidate going for less than a full academic year.

Successful candidates:

will receive a monetary award (maximum €70,000 for the full academic year)
accident and emergency insurance while in the United States
can participate on a range of cultural and professional programs in Ireland and the US
must apply for and be granted a J-1 visa for the United States which will remain their status until the completion of their approved academic program
are subject to the 2-year home rule. They will not be eligible for a US residency or work visa until they have fulfilled the two-year home residency requirement of the J-1 visa
must take up their award within the academic year for which the award is granted. All Fulbright awards are for one academic year only. If an awardee is unable to take up the award within that period, s/he will be asked to reapply the following year
must submit progress reports during the course of their award.

Closing date is 12 noon on 30 October 2009.
