What's on offer
Fulbright Student Awards are for post-graduate applicants who intend to enrol on a US Masters or PhD degree program or conduct independent research (minimum 6 months) as part of an Irish or European PhD program. The awards are only available for one academic year but students may remain in the US for the full duration of their academic program if it is greater than the year.
The following Fulbright Student Awards are on offer in 2010 - 2011:
1.Fulbright awards in any discipline including deaf studies and the visual and performing arts.
2.Fulbright awards for specific subject areas. These include:
•Fulbright – CRH Award in Business Studies
•Fulbright - Enterprise Ireland Award in Science, Technology and Innovation
•Fulbright - Environmental Protection Agency Award in Environmental Science / Policy
•Fulbright - Glen Dimplex Award in Science, Technology and Renewables
•Fulbright - Teagasc Award in Agriculture and Food Science / Policy.
Successful candidates:
1.will receive a monetary award (maximum value €20,000) for a full academic year) and accident and emergency insurance while in the United States.
2.can participate on a range of cultural and professional programs in Ireland and the US.
3.must apply for and be granted a J-1 visa for the United States which will remain their status until the completion of their approved academic program.
4.are subject to the 2-year home rule. They will not be eligible for a US residency or work visa until they have fulfilled the two-year home residency requirement of the J-1 visa.
5.must take up their award within the academic year for which the award is granted. All Fulbright awards are for one academic year only. If an awardee is unable to take up the award within that period, s/he will be asked to reapply the following year.
6.must submit progress reports during the course of their award.
Who can apply
Potential applicants should ensure that they meet the following eligibility criteria before applying:
1.student status: anyone regardless of age that intends to enrol on a US Masters or PhD degree program or conduct independent research (minimum 6 months) as part of an Irish or European PhD program.
2.excellence in their academic / professional and personal qualifications:
•a recognised third-level degree of at least 2:1 honours standard. Applicants will be accepted from outstanding students in their final year of study. Graduates who have achieved a 2.2 grade in their primary degree, and who have subsequently demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in their post-graduate degree/s, are eligible to apply
•deaf studies, visual and performing arts applicants may be exempt from the requirements to have a third level qualification if they have equivalent professional qualifications and / or experience
•an clear sense and or demonstration of leadership and
•an understanding of the Fulbright Program and the role and benefit of being a “Fulbrighter".
3.a concise and clearly defined course of study or research. In their application, applicants should outline what program of study or research they intend to complete in the US, why they need to go to the US and how the period in the US will enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding in the discipline. Preference will be given to degree – seeking candidates (those who are proposing to enrol on a post-graduate course of study in the US) or current PhD candidates in advanced stages of their research.
4.application to a recognised institution in the US. Successful candidates must secure admission to a US college before commencing an award and ensure that they have enough funds to cover all the costs of study (e.g. tuition, accommodation, living costs, travel). These costs can average around $60,000 per year. Students should be applying directly to US colleges for admission and financial aid at the same time or prior to applying for a Fulbright award. Requests for financial aid are usually a separate process from the admission process and may have an earlier closing date. 5.citizenship:
The following applicants are eligible:
•Irish citizens who are resident on the island of Ireland
•Irish citizens who are ordinarily resident in other EU member states and who are not eligible to apply for a Fulbright award in their country of residence
•EU citizens who are ordinarily resident in Ireland. A person is deemed to be ordinarily resident in the State if s/he has been living here for the past three consecutive years.
The following applicants are ineligible:
•US citizens / dual nationals and holders of US immigrant visas (green cards), or applicants for same, are not eligible to apply
•applicants with extensive previous experience in the United States (e.g. currently studying at or recently graduated from a US academic institution, resident for five or more years in the previous six years).
How to apply
Fulbright grants are selected through an open and merit-based competition.
Applicants must:
Ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria. CANDIDATES WHO DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE CRITERIA AND OR THE APPLICATION PROCESS WILL BE CONSIDERED INELIGIBLE AND WILL NOT BE SHORT-LISTED FOR INTERVIEW.
Complete and submit the ONLINE application form and the required supplemental forms (the academic references) by 12 NOON ON 4TH DECEMBER 2009. Once you have logged onto the online system READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that provide comprehensive information about how to complete the application form. 1 original ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT(S) that can be obtained from the Registrar, faculty office, or department/school. All transcripts must be appropriately stamped or endorsed and posted to the Fulbright Commission along with your application
if not submitted on-line, 3 original REFERENCES on the Fulbright Letter of Reference Form which can be printed from the supplemental forms section of the on-line system. These must be in individually sealed envelopes and signed across the seal by the referee. References may be enclosed with the application documents outlined below or sent directly by the referee to the Fulbright Commission’s office to arrive on or before the closing date
4 COPIES of the FULBRIGHT STUDENT PROGRAM APPLICATION which should include :
ALL 45 QUESTIONS completed
A STUDY / RESEARCH OBJECTIVE (QUESTION 27) that outlines what program of study or research will be completed in the US, why s/he needs to go to the US and how the period in the US will enhance knowledge, skills and understanding in the discipline
A PERSONAL STATEMENT (QUESTION 28) that outlines the motivations for, relevant preparations for, expectations of the award and the benefit of a becoming a Fulbrighter
CURRICULUM VITAE that should be uploaded at ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (QUESTION 29)
For Visual and Performing Arts Applicants: 4 copies of a selection of RECENT WORK ideally on CD or DVD.
If short-listed be available for interview in Dublin in mid January – early February 2010. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be available for interview at the date and time allocated and to cover the associated costs. After the interviews, the recommendations of the interview panels will be considered by the Fulbright Commission Board. The Board’s decisions and offers will be conveyed to applicants in April - May 2010.
Fulbright awards are subject to the candidate:
Receiving and accepting an admission offer / affiliation letter from a recognised institution in the US
Confirming they have sufficient funds to complete their programs / course of study
Receiving final approval from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, DC
Receiving medical clearance and a J-1 visa.
