Finland and Sweden: Erik Allardt Fellowship 2010–2011

Overview

In order to further and strengthen academic and cultural exchange between Finland and Sweden within a context of high quality research in the social and human sciences, the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, Stiftelsen Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) have created the Erik Allardt Fellowship Programme.

For the academic year 2010–2011 SCAS offers a residential fellowship for one or two scholars working on a permanent basis in a university in Finland. Candidates may come from any discipline within the humanities and social sciences. Early career as well as senior scholars are welcome to apply. The application may be for the entire academic year (September 2010 – mid-June 2011) or alternatively for one academic semester (September – mid-December 2010 or mid-January – mid-June 2011).

Facilities and Services at SCAS

Founded in 1985, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) is chartered by the Government of Sweden as the national institute for advanced study in the social sciences and the humanities. It is located in the late eighteenth-century Linneanum in the middle of the Botanic Garden in Uppsala.

The Collegium is a scholarly community of some thirty-five Fellows. Scholars can be nominated or apply to become Fellows-in-residence. After an extensive review process, senior and early career scholars (beyond the doctorate) are invited to spend one academic year (or semester) at SCAS. Fellows are free to focus on their own research whether they choose to work individually or form part of a thematic group. The Collegium tries to serve as a free meeting place and a breeding zone of new ideas across boundaries of discipline, nation, and age.

In the academic year 2009-2010, the invited Fellows come from a variety of institutions, including the Australian National University in Canberra, CNRS (Paris), University of Birmingham, University of Chicago, École pratique des Hautes Études (Paris), Universität Erfurt, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Universität Hamburg, Harvard University, University of Iowa (Iowa City), Lomonosov Moscow State University, Université Paris Sorbonne, Purdue University (West Lafayette), SSRC (New York City), University of Wisconsin-Madison, Yerevan State University, and from the Nordic countries the universities of Uppsala, Helsinki, Lund, Oslo, Stockholm and Jyväskylä. Disciplines represented include Archaeology, Anthropology, Chinese History and Language, Economics, Ethnology, History, Literature, Old and Medieval Scandinavian Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Theology.

Accommodation for Fellows is arranged by the Collegium and all Fellows have their own fully-equipped office in Linneanum. The collections of the Carolina Rediviva Library and other scientific facilities at Uppsala University are situated nearby. Books are delivered directly to SCAS by the university library. Weekly seminars serve as a focus of shared activities and Fellows are asked to give one seminar during their stay. In addition, lectures, colloquia and other intellectual encounters offer opportunities for interaction as do the lunches each week day and excursions and other social and cultural events.

Stipends

Stiftelsen Riksbankens Jubileumsfond has allocated a stipend of up to SEK 30 000 a month for the holder of the fellowship. Costs for housing and lunches are covered by SCAS. For senior scholars, SCAS may contribute additional means so that qualified candidates are not dissuaded from applying for fear of significant loss of income.

Deadline and Application Procedures

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a project proposal, in English, of 1500–3000 words. The final selection will be made by the Principal of SCAS at the recommendation of an Academic Board consisting of Professor Christina Garsten (Stockholm University), Professor Pauli Kettunen (University of Helsinki), Professor Barbro Klein (SCAS), Professor Laura Kolbe (University of Helsinki), Professor Uskali Mäki (Academy of Finland Professor), Professor Kari Palonen (Academy of Finland Professor), Professor Sami Pihlström (Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies), Professor Juha Sihvola (University of Jyväskylä), Professor Björn Wittrock (SCAS). Applications may be sent by regular mail, postmarked no later than March 1, 2010, to SCAS, Att: Dr. Anna Svensson, Linneanum, Thunbergsvägen 2, 752 38 Uppsala, SWEDEN, or by e-mail: (fellowselection@swedishcollegium.se).
