Overview
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is one of South Africa's leading Universities. It is situated in Johannesburg, in the economic heartland of South Africa. It has a student body of about 26,000 and a vibrant and diverse research culture.
Applications are invited for the Hillel Friedland Postdoctoral Fellowship. The late Mr Friedland stipulated that the Fellowship was intended for truly outstanding young individuals, who had completed a doctorate in the past five years and who wished to conduct cutting-edge research in a topic relevant to the health of the people of South Africa. The topic is to be broadly construed and the research need not necessarily be of a clinical nature, but could also cover aspects such as basic sciences in medicine, health education or policy, housing, sanitation, demography, etc.
Value of this fellowship
Two Fellowships are offered, with an annual tax-free value of R300,000. Health insurance, an air fare to Johannesburg and support for conference attendance are also offered. The appointment would be for three years, subject to annual confirmation of satisfactory progress. The Fellowship is open to persons of any nationality who are not older than 35.
Persons who are neither South Africans citizens nor permanent residents may enter the country with a visitor's visa and visitor's permit to take up this Fellowship - no work or study permit is required.
Successful candidates will be expected to publish their work in leading journals and give an annual public lecture.
