Overview
The University of Manchester - School of Psychological Sciences, Clinical & Health Psychology Research Group
Dr Warren Mansell & Dr Sara Tai
The Clinical and Health Psychology Research Group invite applications for the following ESRC studentship. The project is due to commence October 2010 and will attract full fee support and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £13,490. Funding is limited to UK/EU* nationals only due to ESRC eligibility requirements.
Method of Levels (MOL) is a form of cognitive therapy derived from Perceptual Control Theory - a theory of self-regulation providing an explanation of human functioning and behaviour. In recent years a number of case studies and case series have shown MOL to be a promising approach to maximising positive health outcomes. The next step in evaluating the technique is to establish its efficacy against a control condition, validate measures to ensure adherence and thereby assess its capacity to maintain and improve wellbeing, as well as investigating its accessibility and its capacity to be applied in different ways in order to make it available to harder to reach populations.
Validating the MOL approach will also contribute to research into control theory as a framework for understanding individual behaviour. The PhD project will:
• Explore adherence to the MOL approach by assessing the proportion of therapist utterances that reflect MOL goals and by establishing convergent validity with scores on a MOL adherence measure.
• Explore cognitive shifts during therapy sessions and the processes that occur before them.
• Assess the efficacy of MOL compared to a control condition.
• Assess the efficacy of MOL in terms of ease of implementation and effectiveness in improving mental health service delivery and for reducing patient waiting times.
• Assess efficacy of computerised MOL for improving well-being for healthy individuals.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in psychology or an associated area to the proposed research. A Masters degree with a strong research component would be an advantage but is not essential. Applicants yet to obtain a Masters will receive ESRC funding in order to support 1+3 (Masters-PhD) training.
Please direct expressions of interest in the following format to Carol Gallagher: carol.gallagher@manchester.ac.uk
Document Requirements
• Covering statement (750 words maximum) outlining your suitability and motivation for the study.
• Academic CV
•Two academic references (only one of which can be provided by proposed PhD supervisor)
• Research proposal (1500 words maximum excluding references)
