UK: Master of Research Scholarships in Law & Society, Legal History, Law at University of Reading

Overview

The University of Reading is one of the top-200 universities in the world and the School of Law is one of the leading Law Schools in the United Kingdom. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the Law School was ranked joint 7th, along with Cambridge and others. for world-leading research and international excellence. It came 11th out of 67 law schools across all research categories. The School has a strong interest in interdisciplinary work and applications are welcome from candidates with degrees not only in Law but also in Criminology, Sociology, History, Politics or other related disciplines.

Up to two fees-only scholarships will be awarded to applicants for full-time study in any of the following programmes in the 2010-11 academic year:

• M Res (Law & Society)
• MA Res (Legal History)
• M Res (Law).

For one scholarship preference may be given to applicants for the M Res (Law & Society). Applicants applying for more than one programme should indicate their order of preference. Scholarships will cover fees at the rate for UK/EU students.


Criteria: Successful applicants will have a strong academic record, holding at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree in a discipline relevant to their proposed programme (or will hold such a degree before September 2010); strong skills in research and writing; an area of research interest that fits with at least one of the School's areas of expertise; and an interest in pursuing doctoral study and/or a research-oriented career.

Eligible Candidates

Applicants must be eligible for ESRC or AHRC postgraduate research funding; in general terms this usually requires that applicants are citizens and/or permanent residents of the UK or another EU country.

How to apply

(1) Submit an application for entry to the programme and include a personal statement of up to 300 words indicating areas of research interest and how the proposed programme of study fits with the applicant's future plans. Closing date

Applications will be accepted until 31 May 2010. Early applications are encouraged and awards may be made prior to the closing date.
