Overview
We welcome proposals from outstanding candidates for a research project into the impact of new media technologies on citizen participation and election campaigning. In particular we are looking for proposals that are comparative in nature that will examine how political and social context shapes and mediates the effects of developments in communication technology upon society. We are also interested in work that will be methodologically innovative in using new web-based methods for conducting online research, as well as more standard techniques of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
UK Students:
a 3-year award consisting of payment of the full-time University of Manchester Home/EU fees (£3,500) plus a maintenance bursary of £13,290 and £750 per annum as a Research Training Grant Support.
or
EU Students:
a 3-year award consisting of payment of the full-time EU fees only (£3,500) and £750 Research Training Grant.
NOTE: EU students who can satisfy the residency criteria as set out by the ESRC will be entitled to the full award (fees+maintenance+research training grant)

Academic requirements
Applicants should have gained or be expecting to gain a relevant Masters degree with an overall average of 60% from a recognised UK Higher Education Institution (or equivalent).
Nationality restrictions
This funding is available to students from the UK and EU.

The Studentship will be allocated on the basis of the linkage of the research proposal to the overall research themes and academic merit. The successful candidate will be required to submit a full PhD application to undergo the standard admissions procedure.
