USA: Fulbright New Century Scholar Program for Egyptian Citizens

Overview

Brings together annually 25-30 outstanding research scholars and professionals from the U.S. and around the world. Through a series of three plenary seminar meetings and a Fulbright exchange visit, scholars engage in collaborative thinking and multi-disciplinary research on a
theme of global significance.

Eligible Fields: New Century Scholar 2009 theme: "The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center." Scholars should have particular expertise and interest in one of the following sub topics:

· Opportunities for and barriers to university-based partnerships for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development.

· Partnerships in science and technology research and development that move ideas and solutions from the laboratory to the marketplace in fields with global reach such as energy security, food production, the environment, health, transportation, and nanotechnology.

· Partnerships (clusters) that contribute to economic development and improving quality of life in local communities and regions.

· Partnerships that apply multidisciplinary research and social entrepreneurship to community issues (historic preservation, crime and drugs, needs of children and the elderly).

· Partnerships that extend the innovation pipeline to K-12 and adult education and lifelong learning.


Eligible Candidates

· Egyptian citizenship; holders of U.S. green cards and/or passports are ineligible
· Ph.D.
· Excellent command of English
· Research activities in the proposed topic

An application consists of:

• Application cover page

• A project abstract

• A project statement: must be the equivalent of 3 - 5 pages, single spaced, in 12-point font size. The project statement must be persuasive and compelling. It should include:

• Objectives and methodology, if the research is quantitative or qualitative in nature.
• Academic and professional context of the project—include a bibliography (not exceeding 3 pages) referring to the leading works by others and the current state of the field.
• Professional experience and scholarly or practical activities prepared for this work.
• Significance does it hold for the NCS Program and its participants for higher education, for national, global and regional economic development.
• Research methodology, logistics and time frame.
• How your results will be disseminated
• Previous Fulbright grantees should also address: what accomplishments and contributions resulted from earlier grant(s); how the NCS grant will build on previous scholarly experience and advance work; what are expected accomplishments with the NCS grant

• One-page bibliography of relevant sources

• A résumé or curriculum vitae (maximum six pages) indicating academic training, professional experience, and major publications. Most recent positions and accomplishments should be listed first. Titles of publications in Arabic should be translated into English.

• Two reference letters.

• A letter of invitation from the institution in the United States.
