Overview
The Alfred Midgley Postgraduate Scholarship was established in 2010 by a bequest from the estate of Zoe Ann Burnett, in memory of her grandfather the late Dr Alfred Midgley. Dr Alfred Midgley contributed to many aspects of early Queensland life. He was a member of the ninth Queensland parliament, an early published Queensland poet, and a minister in the Methodist Church. Zoe Ann Burnett graduated in Arts from The University of Queensland in 1948 and was awarded a Masters of Literary Studies in 1989.
The purpose of the scholarship is to support a research higher degree student (MPhil or PhD) engaged in research in the field of Australian literature working in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History (EMSAH).
The value of the scholarship will be set annually by the Head of the School of EMSAH. The minimum amount will be $6000 and the maximum amount will not exceed the annual distributable income of the estate of Zoe Ann Burnett.
One or more scholarships may be awarded each year, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of English, Media Studies and Art History.
An applicant is eligible for the award of a scholarship in a year if, in that year, the applicant:
(a) is undertaking postgraduate study in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History; and
(b) is conducting research in Australian literature; and
(c) applies for the scholarship by the closing date for applications.
The recipient of a scholarship may hold the scholarship for the duration of the course of study, subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
