PhD scholarship in Physics

Overview

A full-time PhD scholarship is available in Physics, MQ Photonics Research Centre, at Macquarie University to be taken up in 2010 or for commencement during Semester 1, 2011 for a suitably qualified domestic or international candidate.

Please quote the allocation reference number 2010147 on your application form (and indicate your project preference for either 'project 1' or 'project 2' under the section on 'Proposed Study').

Project 1: High power beam conversion in diamond Raman lasers

Project Description:

Diamond has many highly unusual and extreme properties that are highly attractive for use a laser gain medium. This project aims to exploit diamond's outstanding thermal properties to create Raman lasers with ultra high power handling capability. Major challenges to be addressed include thermal management, beam quality, temporal shape and wavelength control. The experimental work will involve high average power pump source development and the creation of novel and miniaturized diamond Raman laser designs. There are significant opportunities for theory and modeling work to augment the experimental findings. Diamond has substantial promise for creating a new class of lasers that address major challenges in fields such as neurosurgery, explosive gas detection and green house gas mapping.

Project 2: Miniature waveguide Raman lasers

Project Description:
Lasers based on stimulated Raman scattering are versatile devices with a large range of applications spanning medicine, telecommunications, defence and environmental sensing. The scholarship is to support a PhD student researching novel and practical methods for creating miniature and efficient Raman lasers that take advantage of recent advances in waveguide technologies and Raman laser materials (including diamond). The project is largely experimental and is anticipated to be augmented by theoretical and model calculations. Major challenges include the creation of low-loss waveguide structures, and radiation coupling to these structures. The ideal candidate will have an interest in optical waveguides (including whispering gallery mode resonators), nonlinear optics, laser design and their underpinning theories.

Successful applicants will join a growing team of researchers within the MQ Photonics Research Centre that aspire to make major advances in diamond lasers, micro-optical systems and nonlinear Raman interactions.

Applicants should have an honours degree in physics or optical engineering or equivalent, preferably specialising in optics and photonics.

Prospective applicants should, in the first instance, submit a cover letter detailing relevant experience, a CV and an academic transcript to the principal supervisor: A/Prof Richard Mildren, email: rmildren@science.mq.edu.au telephone: +61 2 9850 8965

The 2011 MQRES full-time stipend rate is $22,860 pa tax exempt for 3.5 years.

Applicants will need to complete a candidature/scholarship application form and arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office. Refer to: http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/applications for further application instructions. Macquarie University will advise the successful applicant of entitlements at the time of scholarship offer.

Please quote the allocation number 2010147 on your application with an indication of your preference for Project 1 or 2.
