USA: Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Chicago, 2011-2012

Overview

The Sawyer Seminar on "Around 1948: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Global Transformation" at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position for the academic year 2011-12. This one-year position, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will be awarded to a scholar pursuing research in a topic related to the project, which looks at the remarkable historical moment ‘around 1948’ across a range of international locations and from the point of view of several disciplines. The significance of the seminar consists in the effort to identify, clarify, and compare the shape and form of the novel alignments and institutions to emerge in the wake of 1948. Disparate moments in culture, society, and politics, we suggest, amounted to a historical turning point, a fundamental transformation the effects of which remain central to our understandings of citizenship, art, and obligation to this day. Rather than neglecting the immediate post-war years as a distinct historical moment, we seek to reveal and analyze little-noticed (or undiscovered) connections and exchanges between events and developments that are proximate in time.

The 2011-12 Sawyer Scholar will be expected to pursue his/her research in residence at the Franke Institute for the Humanities throughout the academic year (late September to mid-June); s/he will organize and lead the bi-weekly workshop of the Sawyer Seminar; participate in staff meetings; and help to shape programmatic events. The Sawyer Scholar will be paired with a Faculty Mentor in the department of his or her discipline. Though this is a research – not a teaching position – the scholar may offer a one-quarter research seminar in his or her field of expertise under the auspices of that department. This research position carries a salary of $50,000 per year. Applicants must have filed their Ph.D. between 7/1/06 and 7/1/11, and may not hold any other appointment during the period of the Sawyer Scholar position.

For fullest consideration, complete application materials are due by Tuesday, March 1. Application includes a brief statement detailing research goals and relation to the agenda of the Sawyer Seminar (500-1000 words); a current writing sample of up to 35 pages; and a CV, including names & contact information of three references. Three letters of recommendation are to be sent directly by the writers. Letters may also be faxed to 773-702-0775, or emailed to:
franke-humanities@uchicago.edu

Address all application materials to:

The Sawyer Postdoctoral Scholar will be announced in early April.
