Research Manager - Experimental & Translational Medicine

The Research Manager for Experimental and Translational Medicine will have a central and senior part to play in the delivery of the Chief Scientist Office's (CSO) new research strategy being published soon.

CSO is the research funding division of The Scottish Government Health Directorates. It has a remit to encourage, develop and fund research to improve the health of the people in Scotland and the quality and cost-effectiveness of health services. CSO is a small specialist team with a budget of £68M to support NHS research infrastructure and a broad spectrum of research activity. This senior post is one of 3 research manager positions in CSO, with a substantial and specific scientific content and significant delegated responsibilities. The post will report to the Director of CSO, Dr Alison Spaull.


Key Responsibilities:

• managing the applications to and awards made by one of our two major grant awarding committees with a typical annual spend of £4.5M
• managing CSO's multi-million research portfolios in cancer and cardio- and cerebro-vascular disease.
• liaising with senior counterparts in other major funders; identifying unmet strategic need and developing appropriate solutions

Requirements

You must hold a BSc and it is desirable you also hold a PhD in a relevant subject. You will be an established academic in healthcare with a strong track record of leading and managing relevant research. A broader knowledge of research management and an understanding of the UK research funding environment would be advantageous. You will have a wide ranging knowledge of relevant research methodologies combined with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.

This is a permanent and pensionable appointment. You should expect to start at the minimum of the salary range although a higher starting salary may exceptionally be offered where a candidate's skills, knowledge and/or experience are considered to be particularly relevant and are clearly evident in the selection process.
