Overview
The ESRC invites applications under the eighth round of the Professorial Fellowship Scheme. The scheme is designed to support leading social scientists working in the UK, by providing them with the freedom to pursue their own innovative and creative research agendas. Fellows will have an outstanding track record of research and be acknowledged scholarly leaders in their field at the international level. It is expected that the Fellows will seek to achieve a significant contribution to the development of social science.
Term of benefits
Fellows will be granted a greater degree of independence than that usually offered under conventional funding mechanisms. When completing their proposals, potential Fellows are asked to provide as much information as possible on methods, hypotheses/ research questions and research design in order to assist the ESRC in its decision-making.
However, referees and assessors will be judging proposals primarily on the basis of an assessment of the Fellows' ability to produce exciting and ground breaking research outcomes. Assessments regarding the maximisation of innovation, and impact will be of paramount importance.
The ESRC accepts that such creativity and innovation may imply greater risks.
Support will be provided for the Fellow through the payment of salary costs. Support may also be provided for additional research assistance costs, and the provision of support for a PhD studentship, linked to the Fellow's award. Fellowships will last for a maximum of three years and it is expected that Fellows can apply for up to a maximum of 60 per cent of their time. ESRC will provide 80 per cent of the full economic cost of the Fellowship. ESRC Professorial Fellows are eligible for REF entry.
It is anticipated that applicants will be notified of the outcomes of their applications by the end of August 2010.
Please note that shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview in the week commencing 24th May 2010. Please keep these dates available.
The closing date for applications is 4pm on 22nd December 2009. Applications received after this time and date will not be accepted.
Applications must be submitted via the Joint Electronic Submission system (Je-S) and as such all applicants must be Je-S Registered. If you are not currently Je-S registered, and intend to apply, please ensure that you allow sufficient time for registration as no extensions to the deadline will be permitted.
