Overview
The ifs School of Finance is the leading provider of education to the financial services sector with a history stretching back over 100 years to its foundation in 1879 as the Institute of Bankers. It gained its Royal Charter in 1987, and in 2006 changed its name to ifs School of Finance better to reflect both its widening student base and the primacy of its educational mission.
The School is a leader both in the UK and for students overseas in higher and further/secondary education. In respect of the former, it delivers three BSc programmes (validated by the Universities of Manchester and Surrey), a Foundation Degree (validated by the University of Kent) and a portfolio of Diplomas, many of which are specially designed and tailored for financial institutions. It also offers a wide-ranging executive education programme to its students and alumni world-wide. The core ethos informing all the ifs’ programmes is the blend of academic theory with the world of practice. Its long history as the principal provider of education to the financial services sector ensures that ifs has the breadth of contacts within financial institutions, at all levels from the most senior to new recruits, to ensure the continuance of this blend and thus the continued demand for its qualification provision.
The School is now expanding its postgraduate and research portfolio. As part of this initiative it offers an annual visiting research fellowship together with a number of short-term research studentships.
Purpose of the Posts
The purpose of these visiting research posts, generously sponsored through the Grunfeld Fund1, is to support original applied research in areas recognised by the School as of critical importance both to the understanding and development of the financial services sector and to the furtherance of the professionalism and sound governance of that sector; and to provide an opportunity for early career researchers in areas related to financial services to enhance their own understanding and to expand their networks through in-depth investigation of a particular issue of interest.
Conditions
Holders of all research posts will be expected to spend a substantial amount of their time on the project. The Fellows and Students will be expected to fulfil the following conditions:
• to carry out and complete research on the topic set out in their proposal;
• to participate in the life of the School through spending an average of one-two days per week within the School at its London home, averaged over the course of their tenure;
• to put their knowledge at the disposal of the School through both advising on relevant curriculum developments; and through presenting their work in at least one seminar to the School’s academic community and/or industry participants;
• to produce a short written report on their research at the conclusion of their appointment;
• to ensure that the School and the Henry Grunfeld Foundation receive printed acknowledgement of their support in any and all publications resulting in whole or in part from research undertaken during tenure of the Fellowship/Studentship;
• to provide the School with printed copies of any and all publications supported in whole or in part by the Fellowship/Studentship;
• the Fellow may also be asked to attend conferences on behalf of the School and/or be invited to teach if relevant on parts of the School’s courses.

The following visiting research posts are available during 2009:
The Henry Grunfeld Visiting Research Fellowships - £18,000 per annum (gross of tax and national insurance contributions)
Open to early career post-doctoral researchers who have completed their PhD in a related subject within the last five years, these one-year research fellowships are intended to support in-depth research to inform curriculum development and enhancement in key areas of interest to the School. Areas may include detailed investigation into the relationship between UK banking liabilities and wholesale funding markets (particularly from overseas depositors); investigation into the social, structural and market risks faced by the new state-owned banks; research into the factors that support or inhibit good customer data management; etc. Applicants may propose other areas for investigation.
Up to two Fellowships may be awarded in any one year.
The Henry Grunfeld Visiting Research Studentships - £1,200 per month (gross of tax and national insurance contributions)
Open to early-career researchers who have completed or are near to completing a PhD in a related area, these short-term (3-4 months) research posts are intended to support researchers with an interest in financial services to start building the industry networks and broader understanding they will need, whilst at the same time conducting a short-term project of relevance and interest to the work of the School. Examples might include investigation into and comparison between the regulatory structures in the UK before, during and after the 2008 ‘Credit Crunch’; exploring new ways to deliver banking services and the issues of trust and risk that emerge; investigating the role of bank non-executive directors; post-credit crisis: the future of the City of London as a financial centre; etc. Applicants may propose other areas for investigation.
Up to four Studentships may be awarded in any one year.
Criteria and Eligibility
Applicants will be expected to provide evidence of a strong academic track record, a commitment to their own personal development and demonstrable initiative. An underpinning purpose of the Henry Grunfeld Foundation is the furtherance of inter-cultural understanding; applicants with an appreciation of these ideals and an awareness of the importance of working internationally across cultures will be particularly welcome.
Post-holders may concurrently hold teaching and/or research posts at other institutions, but will be expected to devote at least the equivalent of one-two days per week on School-related research and other activities, averaged over the course of their tenure.
Applicants must ensure and will be expected to demonstrate their eligibility to reside in the UK for the purpose of undertaking research activities.
These posts do not constitute employment with the ifs.
Applications
Applicants should apply by writing to the Director of Studies, Postgraduate Programmes stating the research post for which they are applying and enclosing the following supporting documentation:

(Please note that ifs School of Finance will not co-fund research proposals under the Henry Grunfeld Fellowship/Studentship Research scheme.)
3.An executive summary of no more than 300 words;
4.An outline of proposals for wider dissemination of the research (noting that the School does not undertake to publish or assist researchers to publish or disseminate the outputs of their research beyond its own publications and seminars);

(Applicants are responsible for showing their application to their referees and for ensuring that the references arrive with the School by the deadline stated since the School will not be responsible for following up references not received.)
All information should be clearly typed on one side of the paper. Applicants should not submit any copies of publications or written work with their applications.
Deadline for latest round of applications extended to end of October 2009
