Overview
University College London - Faculty of Arts and Humanities
One Studentship to start in September 2010 for a four year PhD
UCL SECReT in collaboration with UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities is offering one four-year EPSRC PhD scholarship in the area of crime and security.
UCL SECReT is the new national UK training centre for security and crime related research degrees. UCL SECReT has been set up following a £7m award by the EPSRC and £10m of support from industrial, academic and public sector partners (such as the Home Office, Met Police, British Transport Police, Lockheed Martin, BT plc, BAE Systems, Thales). SECReT is a world-class interdisciplinary centre applying the latest techniques in a variety of disciplines to problems in the crime and security domain.
The UCL SECReT programme provides a balanced agenda that integrates research, taught elements and transferable professional skills throughout a four-year programme. Our focus is on creating a truly unique student experience and integrating a community of researchers into a cohesive centre of excellence.
The PhD is an interdisciplinary project and the candidate will be working with others from a wide range of generally scientific backgrounds on the common problem of delivering security. The scholarship is an innovation for the SECReT Centre ( www.ucl.ac.uk/secret ) and although PhD topics are flexible to the end of year one, we will be most interested in applicants who can demonstrate an exciting, novel approach to security science from their host academic perspective.
The research project may be in any field within the Arts and Humanities (including Languages and Cultures, the Centre for European Studies, the Centre for Intercultural Studies, English, Philosophy, the Slade and Information Studies), and will aim to contribute to our understanding of crime and security. For a full list of Departments and Centres, and for further links to prospective supervisors, see http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ah/
Funding and Scholarships
The EPSRC scholarship will pay PhD fees and about £17,000 tax-free stipend annually.
