Overview
The Business School has a vibrant postgraduate research community where there are currently over 140 students enrolled on its Doctoral programmes. It has excellent research ratings with 94 per cent of its research classified as being of international quality (RAE 2008). As part of its ongoing development of postgraduate research, the Business School is offering up to 7 fully-funded studentships for October 2010 start. Priority will be given to applicants with research proposals that align with Business School priorities as well as the University of Exeter Research Beacons and Key Themes.
We are keen to attract students with strong experience of independent research and knowledge of research methods, techniques and approaches at Masters level. As with all Doctoral students in the Business School, further training opportunities are available based on training needs assessment at the start of your studies.
We strongly encourage applications from candidates interested in:
•Service Management including the impact of customer value on service systems design and linkages between operations and customer satisfaction
•Health Service Management, various topics working closely with the Strategic Health Authority, for example leadership in the NHS and analysing and improving patient safety.
•Entrepreneurship, in particular policy based questions regarding the development role of Entrepreneurial Finance, e.g. venture capital as a source of support for the rapid growth of innovative firms
•Marketing: branding, consumer research, marketing ethics with special focus on consumer culture theory and the creation of marketing knowledge.
•Organisation Behaviour and Human Resource Management including diversity, gender, the management of SMEs and family businesses, ethics, organisation scandals, spirituality and organisation with a particular focus on qualitative, critical and inter-disciplinary studies
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to look at staff profiles for further topic ideas but all worthy applications will be considered whether or not they match current research interests.
CriteriaYou should have an appropriate first degree in any social science discipline of class 2:1 or above. You should also have a Master’s degree in a subject of relevance to the research proposal.
Preference will be given to applicants who have received ESRC accredited training at Master’s level. If English is not your first language, a language test certificate is required with the following minimum requirements for this studentship: IELTS 7.0. Personal qualities should also include the ability to work independently and high degree of motivation necessary to complete a PhD in three years.
Value of this studentship
All fees paid for three years plus an annual Research Council-equivalent maintenance grant for three years. In 2009/10 this was £13,290 per year; the 20010/11 grant will be announced later in the year.
