Overview
The fellowship will be part of a larger, international research project focusing on the development of a cost-effective vaccination strategy against poultry being colonised by Campylobacter using different vaccine candidates and delivering systems. The project consists of four work packages, where the first three focus on experimental challenge trials with three different vaccine candidates in three different countries. The fourth work package, which mainly involves this PhD program, deals with the biostatistical design and analysis of the challenge trials, design of field studies and the development of a decision tool based on commercial interface software for design of a vaccination strategy. The software work will be done by a commercial company as collaborator. The decision to use a vaccine will be based on assessment of the efficiency of the vaccines as well as management factors in different poultry industries. Field studies will be main part of the PhD work.
The project will be carried out in cooperation with Utrecht University (the Netherlands), University of Arizona (USA), University of Copenhagen, and the private company Hugin Expert A/S. A 3-months stay for the PhD student at University of Arizona is planned. Besides this, the student should visit the laboratories of the international partners and participate at relevant international congresses. Therefore, you should be quite mobile and able to travel to other laboratories and pay frequent visit to chicken production sites for sampling and so on.
Eligible Candidates
We expect that you have knowledge of infection biology with an interest in patterns of infections under field conditions and the influence of various factors on the frequency and distribution of infections in animal populations. Basic knowledge of risk assessment or epidemiology is an advantage, however, an interest in biostatistics is highly favourable. We are looking for a student that is interested in working in an international research environment and like to communicate scientific results.
