Overview
The purpose of the Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) Program implemented by the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium is to encourage Belgian and Luxembourgian students and individuals to undertake Mandarin Chinese language study at a university- or college-affiliated Mandarin training center in Taiwan. This program also aims to:
- Help scholarship recipients acquire a better command of Mandarin Chinese, and hence a greater understanding and appreciation of Taiwan’s culture;
- Promote friendship between people in Taiwan and in countries around the world; and
- Generate opportunities to increase exchange with international educational institutions.
Quotas, Value and Duration:
5 to 20 language scholarships: A monthly stipend of NT$ 25,000 (approximately 537 euros) over the course of 3 months, 6 months, 9 months or one year during the period from September 1st , 2010 through August 31st , 2011
Eligibility:
An applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
a. Be of 18 years of age or older, a high school graduate or above, have an excellent academic performance in his/her most recent formal educational study experience and be of good moral character.
b. Is not a Republic of China (Taiwan) national.
c. Does not have the status of being an overseas compatriot student.
d. Has never been and isn’t currently a student at a Mandarin training center, or a degree-seeking student at any university or college in Taiwan.
e. Is not an exchange student in accordance with an agreement of cooperation between an international university/college and an educational institute in Taiwan, at the time of receiving an HES.
f. Has never received an award either under this scholarship program nor the Taiwan Scholarship Program.
g. Is not a recipient of any other scholarship or subsidy offered by the Taiwan government or any other educational institutions in Taiwan.
Required Application Documents:
a. One copy of the completed application form.
b. One photocopy of passport or other nationality certificates.
c. One photocopy of the highest-level diploma and a complete grade transcript.
d. Two letters of recommendation
e. Supporting admission application materials (e.g. photocopies of application form for language training centers).
Application Procedure
Application period for Taiwan scholarships and Huayu Enrichment scholarships is from February 1st through March 31 st, 2010.
The required application documents should reach the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium before March 31 st, 2010. To obtain an application form, please contact the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium or access to the website at www.taiwanembassy.org/BE/.
Selection and Notification
The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium will review and select eligible scholarship candidates as well as alternatives and will notify them by the end of April, 2010.
The eligible scholarship candidates are required to submit a copy of the school admission letter to the Cultural Division of Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium by no later than the end of June 2010. Late submission of this document after the deadline will be deemed as a waiver for accepting the scholarship. In this case, the alternative(s) will be informed to fill any vacancy(s). The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium will send a scholarship award certificate to all qualified recipients before the end of July 2010.
