Three Part-time Research Positions

at the

‘Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics, 18th - 21st centuries’

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Studies in History, Economy and Society (Moscow, Russia), the International Institute of Social History (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and the New Economic School (Moscow, Russia) are looking for three part-time research assistants to the ‘Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics, 18th - 21st centuries’, a project funded by the ‘Dynasty’ foundation (Moscow, Russia).

The ideal candidates for the positions are researchers in the early stage of their career (PhD/candidate of science degree not earlier than 1 September 2000), or currently enrolled in a PhD/candidate of science program in history, economics or the social sciences.

Successful candidates will carry out tasks related to the identification of relevant sources and statistical collections, the planning and implementation of data-processing, as well as data-entry and data-base creation. Workloads within the project are twenty hours per week. Research-assistants will also be encouraged to participate in data applied research associated with the project. Depending on experience and qualifications salaries will be in the range of 25-36,000 rubles per month before taxes. Candidates have to be based in Moscow for the duration of the project. Equipment (laptop computer etc.) will be provided from the project budget.


PROJECT SUMMARY:

The aim of the project is to create an on-line electronic repository of Russian historical statistics. The repository operates on the principle of a historical data-hub, bringing together data extracted from various published and unpublished sources in one place. Data are standardised to facilitate access and to enable comparative research over time and across regions and nations. The principal focus of the data-hub is Russian economic and social history of the last three centuries (18th-21st). The Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics will be the first research tool of its kind and scope to be created in the Russian Federation. It will cater to the needs of the scholarly community, of teachers and students in the social sciences in higher education, and aims to provide the basis for an informed public debate on Russia’s past and present social and economic performance.

WORKING LANGUAGES: English and Russian (proficiency in both required)

Eligible Candidates

Disciplines: Russian History or Applied Social Science. Candidates with a background in economic history or social science history are particularly encouraged to apply.

Academic profile: Enrollment in a "candidate of science" or Ph.D. program, or completion of either degree not earlier than 1 September 2000.

Other requirements: Experience of work with Russian historical statistics and with research in the Russian archival and librarian system; Reading and listening proficiency in both English and Russian; good computer skills; desire to develop academic career in economic or social history.
