Scotland: PhD opportunities in Accountancy, Economics and Finance at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

Overview

The Accountacy, Economics and Finance PhD programme is a well-established and successful programme and we actively recruit an international body of research students to stimulate peer discussion benefiting from diverse cultural perspectives and backgrounds. There is no requirement that students research particular areas, although to ensure supervision of a high standard it is preferred that proposals be in areas of interest to intended supervisors. Current PhD supervision includes studies on various national accounting disclosure regulations, the performance of managed funds and the evolution of financial markets in developing countries. We also take part in numerous national networks to support the research of postgraduate students, providing a forum to present work at a national level at an early stage in their development and to gain from the experience of others.

Recent graduates of the PhD programme have gone on to take positions in internationally renowned companies such as Goldman Sachs and Deloitte Touche and several graduates have pursued academic careers in the UK and overseas.

About Accountancy, Economics and Finance at SML

The Accountancy, Economics and Finance is the home of a dynamic group of researchers with a range of specialisations, benefiting from synergies with other departments of the School of Management and Languages. Staff currently hold positions as visiting faculty members in several transition countries, and have recently held posts in universities in Australasia and the United States as well as gaining further experience as practitioners in the private sector. Faculty members are also closely associated with international networks for the dissemination of new developments in their fields of research, both to academic and non-academic audiences.

In accountancy the major research themes of the department are in comparative international accountancy, the history of the accounting profession and the evolution of regulatory frameworks in transition and other developing countries. In finance research is being carried out in fields of corporate finance such as the cost of capital and governance mechanisms, and also in the structural modelling of financial assets and markets. Members of staff have recently presented and given keynote addresses at international conferences in these areas and continue to be at the forefront of research.

The expertise of our Economists spans a wide range of areas, from unemployment, macro and international trade to environmental economics and development. A particular strength is the economics of transition: the Centre for Economic Reform and Transformation (CERT) is an internationally recognised centre for the study of the transition economies.

CERT is a leading European centre for the study of transition from socialism to the market in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and East Asia, with a particular strength in applied microeconomic research. Privatisation, enterprise restructuring, corporate and public finance, labour market reform, EU enlargement, foreign trade policy and macroeconomic stabilisation in transition economies are just some of the research interests within the Centre. CERT staff teach the transition economics option on the SGPE MSc, and this is a popular entry route for PhD study in the economics of transition. Further details on CERT can be found at www.sml.hw.ac.uk/cert/

Financial Support

A range of scholarships are available to help support full-time PhD research in Accountancy, Economics and Finance.

ORS/James Watt Scholarships

International students from outside the EU are eligible to apply for scholarships under the Overseas Research Student Award Scheme (ORS) and for Heriot-Watt University’s James Watt scholarships. These scholarships provide both full university postgraduate fees and a contribution to maintenance costs for a maximum of three years. These programmes are very competitive and only the most able students are likely to be successful in their application. For more information, visit the University’s online postgraduate prospectus (www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk).

School of Management and Languages Postgraduate Research Studentships

The School has a postgraduate research studentship (PGR) scheme that covers both full university postgraduate fees and full maintenance costs (indexed to the maintenance paid to PG students by the UK Research Councils). Recipients of these studentships work a limited number of hours as teaching or research assistants within the School. Students from all countries are eligible to apply. The number of scholarships available through the School PGR scheme is limited, and these scholarships will be awarded only to applications with very strong qualifications.

Fees-only Scholarships

A limited number of three-year fees-only scholarships are available to postgraduate research students in the SML. Students from all countries are eligible to apply. A condition of these scholarships is that students must show how their maintenance funding will be provided during the course of their studies.
