Overview
The Centre for Law, Justice and Journalism (CLJJ) is hosted by the School of Law, and is the first major interdisciplinary centre in the UK to develop a broad yet focussed interface between law, justice and journalism in society.
The Centre brings together expertise in the disciplines of Law, Criminology, and Journalism, at City University London. The addition of other disciplines/fields – Communications, Forensics and International Politics - provides important intellectually relevant and distinctive additions to the Centre.
The Centre is underpinned with high quality teaching particularly in the existing and successful postgraduate courses, PhD programmes, and CPD, in Law, Justice, and Journalism.
The Centre is offering 3 three-year, full-time doctoral Research Studentships, available to both home and overseas fee-paying students.
For two of the studentships, applications can be made to undertake doctoral studies in a topic of an interdisciplinary nature and relevant to the five main themes of the Centre for Law, Justice and Journalism:
- Legal Restraints on the media
- Transformations in media policy
- Journalism and Human Rights
- Media, Security and Justice
- Communicating Forensic evidence.
The third studentship offered is linked to the newly launched Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Applications are invited to undertake research on the future for quality and in-depth investigative journalism in a fragmented media market. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop their substantive research skills alongside broader professional development. The research will involve looking at a number of areas of the financial climate, media industry and legal framework for the future of investigative journalism. These include examining:
- How media companies, in an era of declining ad revenues and declining audience reach, can justify the investment in news stories that take a long time to deliver and have a high failure rate.
- How media companies, faced with high legal costs and libel laws, can justify the risk involved in investigating wealthy individuals and companies.
- How investigative journalism can make an impact in an era of ever fragmenting media platforms and the decline of the captive audience.
- Whether there are new ways to trim the costs of investigations (ie computer programme assisted investigations).
Amount Awarded
For entry in October 2010, the studentships will attract a bursary of £12,000 per annum in addition to payment of the tuition fees. Successful candidates will usually be expected to undertake some teaching support activity in their second and third years, by agreement with the School concerned.
