Overview
The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brasilia, Brazil, and TWAS offer up to fifty fellowships per year to young scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) who wish to pursue research leading towards a PhD in natural sciences.
IMPORTANT: The CNPq postgraduate fellowship call for applications is now open and applications for full-time and sandwich PhD are accepted.
I. OBJECTIVES OF THE CALL
Young scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) are invited to apply to the 2010 CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programmes.
The fellowships offered by the CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programmes allow scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) to study or to do research in the natural sciences in Brazil and then to return home to continue their careers.
The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brasilia, Brazil – www.cnpq.br – is a foundation linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology. CNPq is one of the major public institutions supporting science, technology and innovation in Brazil and contributes directly to the training of researchers in the various fields of knowledge.
TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world – www.twas.org – is an autonomous international organization founded in Trieste, Italy, in 1983. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South.
II. WHO CAN APPLY
The 2010 CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programmes are open only to young scientists from developing countries, other than Brazil.
It is important to note that the Brazilian scientists or students cannot apply for fellowships under the CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programmes but they can apply for fellowships under all the other TWAS Fellowships programmes. III. TYPES OF FELLOWSHIPS AND DURATION
The 2010 CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programmes offer the following types of fellowships:
- Full-time postgraduate/doctorate fellowships: CNPq-TWAS Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at research institutions in Brazil for a period of up to 48 months and are awarded to students from developing countries (other than Brazil) to enable them to pursue studies leading towards a PhD degree in the natural sciences.
- Sandwich postgraduate/doctorate fellowships: CNPq-TWAS Sandwich Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at research institutions in Brazil for a period of a minimum duration of 6 months, renewable for up to a maximum of 12 months, and are awarded to students from developing countries (other than Brazil) to enable them to develop part of their PhD course in the natural sciences in Brazil. Under the sandwich programme, applicants must be registered for a PhD degree in their home country.
- Postdoctoral fellowships: CNPq-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable at research institutions in Brazil for a minimum period of 6 months to a maximum period of 12 months. They are awarded to scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) to enable them to pursue postdoctoral research in the natural sciences.
IV. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE 2010 CNPq-TWAS FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAMMES
- Applicants already in Brazil are not eligible.
- Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply.
- Applications for part-time Fellowships will be considered ineligible.
- Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- Applicants must submit an official Acceptance Letter from the host institution in Brazil. The acceptance letters must show a starting date in the year following the application (e.g. for 2010 applications the acceptance letter must show the starting date as 2011).
- Applicants must provide evidence that they will return to their home country upon completion of their Fellowship.
- Successful candidates will be notified by January of the year following the application.
-All specific obligations, regulations, stipends etc will be thoroughly explained to successful candidates in the award letter/contract.
- International travel (return economy class by the shortest route) and visa expenses will be covered by TWAS.
- Awarded Fellowships must be taken up within one year of the date of the award letter.
- The Fellowships do not include provisions for accompanying family members.
- Successful applicants must not take up other assignments during the period of their Fellowships.
-CNPq and TWAS shall be entitled to a repayment of all or part of any funds paid to an applicant hereunder, in the event that the applicant intentionally or negligently fails to fulfil any or all of the present conditions. The applicant agrees to pay any reasonable legal and/or collection costs incurred by CNPq and TWAS to obtain the repayment.
- Please note that applicants may apply for only one TWAS Fellowship per year. For example, applicants to the TWAS-CNPq programme cannot also apply to TWAS Fellowship programmes with other partners in the same year, including those provided through CAS, CEMB, CSIR, DBT, IACS, ICCBS, S.N. Bose, USM, TWAS Fellowships for Research and Advanced Training and the TWOWS Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) at Centres of Excellence in the South.
