Overview
The PhD student will initially work at Friedrich Alexander Universität (Erlangen – Nürnberg) for a 24-month period [in contact with Günter Leugering] and then will spend 12 months at University of Paris-VI [in contact with Jean-Michel Coron].
Program Description
Optimal control and stabilization of flow of gas or water in networked pipe-systems, is one of the major challenges in Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics. Such systems are defined by nonlinear hyperbolic balance laws used along the links (pipes) while nodal conditions are to be applied at the multiple nodes (joints) and boundary conditions at the intake-nodes. Control instruments are to be modelled via nonlinear and non-homogenous nodal conditions at simple and multiple nodes. The first goal is to fully understand the reachability and stabilizability properties under constraints both in the states and the controls. The second goal is to derive sensitivities, including shock-sensitivities, in order to apply real-time capable algorithms for the numerical treatment of optimal controls for systems of realistic size. Secondly, interaction of flow, mechanical vibrations of the pipes as well as the heat-managent are taken into account. Thirdly, damage models are to be considered.
Research Field
Mathematics - Applied mathematics
Benefits
Standard Marie Curie ITN contract for a PhD
Eligibility requirements
Additional Requirements Masters/Diploma background in analysis of partial differential equations and optimal control. In exceptional cases, also candidates with BSc will be considered. Evidence of high mathematical technical and creative skills is required.
Basic knowledge of German would be advantageous.
The position is subject to the Marie Curie FP7 Early Stage Researcher eligibility requirements, concerning mobility and research experience. Briefly, an eligible ESR should be within the first four years of his/her scientific career and must be national of any country but Germany. Moreover, he/she must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the date of selection. See the FIRST website for more details.
